Checked out at 05:30 and broke he inlet to a wonderful sunrise on the ocean, arrived at first point @ 8AM and set up the baits and slick, dead calm no breeze. Frustrating as hell after all the wind the past two weeks. Capt did some power drifting to try to get things going but no bites and after 2 1/2 hours we made a move. Set up @ 11:30 baits in the water and chum flowing nicely now and just a bit more breeze, enough o create the proper conditions. At 12:25, closest bait rod starts clicking, clicks some more and finally a hook up. The beast takes off on a run and nearly spools the reel on me as the captain is back down on it. Finally gain on it getting the mono back over top of the braid and the game of give and take began while we passed the rod between our crew numerous times. We fought the beast we never got a glimpse of for the next 3 1/2 hours and chased it for 5 miles. At 3:50PM we cam unbuttoned as the line separated from the connection to the wire leader and hook. Disappointing but that's fishing and wasn't for lack of effort by the boat or our crew. My opinion is that it was a very large thresher the way it would stalemate with us after gaining line and then become a standoff. A great memory to store in the fishing stories to share......And I still ache 2 days later like never before battling a fish......
