Just be careful you just might catch a cold.  That is nothing to sneeze at this time of year.   hhppy

Hey, I'm leaving Monday for Northern Maine to do some ice fishing!  There is plenty of ice up there.  My Dad put his shack on the lake on the 30th and after he cut the hole he measured 10 inches of clear ice and about 3 inches of white ice.  There will be close to 3 feet, if not more by the end of February.

The state of Maine puts a chart on the back page of the regulation book that tells you how much weight the ice can handle.  It's good info to have. Here it is...

Permissible load based on clear, blue lake ice:

2"-One person on foot
3"-Group of people walking single file (I put a snowmobile on 3")
7 1/2"-Passenger car (2 ton gross)
8"-Light truck (2 1/2 ton gross)
10"-Medium truck (3 1/2 ton gross)
12"-Heavy truck ( 7 - 8 ton gross)
15"-Heavy truck ( 10 ton gross)
20"-25 tons
25"-45 tons
30"-70 tons
36"-110 tons

He said there were trucks driving all over the lake and parking next to each other.  I can't wait to get up there!

Ice fishing is great.  There's nothing like being out in -25 degree temps in the middle of the lake at 4:30am drilling holes with an ice auger and sniffing up the snot only to have your nostrils freeze shut!!  WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!

Good morning guys!!  Just an update...got up here to Maine 1 day late cause of the snow storm.  Went ice fishing yesterday with my dad and girlfriend and we did pretty good.  I caught 3 landlocked salmon, girlfriend caught 2, dad caught 2.  My girlfriend and I each had one that was 3 1/2 pounds!  I'll post pics when we get back to jersey.  Gotta go now, we're heading back out there now to do it all over again...only thing is...it's -6 degrees outside right now!!! brrrrrr

Glad to hear your trip to maine was a success Basslover.

Temp's are supposed to be below freezing for the next week here in northern NJ.

Hopefully the lakes will safe enough in a couple of week.

I think we'll know more by next weekend Wing, my best guess would be the first week of Feb at the earliest.

This recent warm spell didn't help matters.

Don't feel bad, even the lakes up by me are no good right now. Last weeks warm spell did them in on the edges. Might be a bit for safe ice!
I did get out twice already this year with the kids. Fished White Lake in Sullivan for a mess a pickerel on tip-ups a few Saturdays ago. Ice was  5" in the coves and no good in the middle of the lake. Went through three dozen large shiners. Had a few bite offs but the action was good for the few hours we were there.

We need some cold weather soon.
