Wire line for Trolling Stripers

I have a few trolling reels to set up for this season.  I usually use 50 lb power pro.  I know most trollers use wire line to get the lures deeper.  Is this necessary?  I use stretch 25 and 30, and they should get it down deep enough.  The bunkers spoons I have are slightly weighted.  I was thinking of putting wire on one of my outfits anyway.  Any suggestions from others. Is it necessary or should i stay away from the wire.

Thats the same setup I use I'm not a big fan of crankin in wire.Stretchs and umbrellas work great on braid havent tried spoons yet,a drail will help out to get you down also.

We use (3) rods rigged with wire and spoons when we're on the troll.  I guess it's a personal preference, but I'm pleased with it.

 i have never used it, and know nothign about it. but i am not anticipating any problems without it running cigar wieghts with the lighter lures to get them down. the stretch lures should be fine getting themselves down

 i've already started my collection of these hunks of lead from 4oz to 8oz. with the heavier stuff yet to come, thinking getting upto 12oz, if i need heavier than that i will get it when i find that i need it.

Be sure to use rod riggers it also helps to get them down and keeps the spread apart on turns.if you dont have them you can get away with a pair of release clips from a down rigger and tie them to you cleats.

Yup, Shucker is right on.  We troll with 2 rod riggers and a 3rd line down the middle.

I troll braid and lead core with good results on both. The lead core seems to be a good alternative to wire line.

Hi Luna,

Like has been stated, I use outrodders to start. My reels are spooled with 50 lb. Power Pro for most of my trolling. If I need weight to get down deeper, I use drails. The Mann's products work great.

For deep trolling, I use downriggers.

I do not pull bunker spoons enough to say whether or not wire line would work better, so I keep it simple with braid.

If you are going to troll spoons and rigs,  Wire is the only way to go.  Wire is very consistant in depth control.  I have trolled stretches on mono with no complaints.  All and all I rather not be trolling, but sometimes necessary.  I hardly ever troll the wire line rods anymore.  After a couple of nice bass on the nine ft spoon rods and I am ready to quit.

 Mad nailed it, wire for spoons........You can get away with braid for 25's and such, but in my opinion if you pull umbrellas be sure to add the drail(as mentioned above)the reason is they create alot of drag. The weight on the spoon is for action.....This is adjustable,mine are set about mid-way favoring the top of the spoon,when the spoons are working you will see a steady pulse on the rod.

Thanks Ed.  I am not a fan of trolling to begin with, but on a day that I don't plan of fishing and just want to go for a boat rid, I wind up wanting to fish anyway so I always keep my trolling rods on the boat.  I hate upbrella rigs.  What a pain.  I only use stretch's and bunker spoons.

 I don't mind going on the troll.....I get the chance to wear out the guy's on the boat . I like to net and live-line bunker myself, but conditions on the water don't always allow this. I keep trolling as a option,it is work but it is an effective method for catching fish (not just bass)and if looking to save the day don't hesitate to try this..........When the clicker screams it is very exciting no matter what others think!                    Good luck,

Hi Guys,

If the snagged bunker actually makes it back to the boat, I use 10/0 circle hooks. I tend to use Owner or Gami hooks these days. There are many good hook manufacturers.

One throw with the net and you get about 50 large bunker.  I use only Gami's and alternate inbetween the J and the circle...

I agree with both of you.  I understand the hesitation to start a discussion about circle hooks. Many can't stand them, I feel they never gave them a chance.  I really started using them for liveline a couple of seasons ago, before that just for clamming. I suggest for someone tryng them out start with the gami octupus cirles.  You can do no wrong with these.  I brought out a guy I work with and he had a ball with them.  No instruction and he was swing and connecting to 30 pound fish all night.  You do not have to leave the rod in the holder and they are not hooking them self.   Every once in awhile the hook will turn in to the bait.  With the cicles I hardly ever drop fish too.  

I am glad to see some others who use them.  The rest of you will come around.

I throw a 8' for peanut bunker in the lagoons, and a 12' for bunker in the Atlantic Highlans marina.

I bought 2 spools of wire at WalMart on clearence for 2.50 a spool. I saw the same spool at at Dicks for 35.00. I bought 2 trolling setups 2 years ago and have yet to try them out.
