NJ trailer regs??
« on: January 11, 2008, 08:25:19 AM »
Am looking to get a used trailer for my 21' CC.

What are the regs in NJ as far as brakes, etc or anything else I should be concerned about?

May go to look at one in PA. owner is selling because he said in PA needs brakes on all 4 wheels, but not in NJ.

Thanks.

Mike, this is the only thing I could find in the Motor Vehicle Rules and Regs for a trailer concerning brakes.  No mention on how many axles, etc.

Private utilities, house semi-trailers and trailers:
If the GVWR (including load) is more than 3,000 lbs. or 40% of the towing vehicle's gross weight, the trailer must be equipped with brakes.

Non-conventional vehicles
A non-conventional vehicle is one that is not primarily used for transporting people or property and is only incidentally operated or moved over public roads.

The following is a list of non-conventional vehicles that must be registered but are exempt from titling:
Trailers & Semi-Trailers (Under 2,500 lbs.)
Bogies
Farm tractors (Under 1,500 lbs.)
Snowmobiles and ATVs
Boat trailers (Under 2,500 lbs.)
Folding Tent (pop-up) Trailers.
Mobile construction field offices
Jet Skis

i personally didn't think that last trailer for sale would have been good for the hull design of Mike's boat.  But what do I know?

Max 8' 6"  wide, 40 foot long.  3000lb or more and you need brakes. Thats all the law says, it does not get specific whether you need brakes on one OR both axles.
I trailered for years with a dual axle, no brakes trailer. I have been checked on Rt 36 numerous times and was only asked for trailer reg. They never checked the trailer for brakes.
Moved up to a LoadRite dual with brakes 2 yrs ago. HUGE difference. Cant tell the boat is back there.
Maintenance on the drum brake sucks. Always something seized or causing problems. Galvanized components my ass, saltwater takes its toll on everything!
