Anyone go from a 3 blade prop to a 4?

What were the results?

I need a new prop this coming season.

4 blade is big $$ new, but i may have a decent price on a used that should fit my boat pretty well.

What did yo notice going from 3 to 4?

i WILL ALSO be going fro Aluminum to SS, so I know there will be some differences as well (some pleasant differences).

I think going from alum to stainless makes a bigger difference than 3 blade to 4. If you prop it right and don't hit anything stainless is a one time buy should last a good long time. I think the 3 blade on my Yammy 225 is original 1992 vintage she runs smooth and true even with few blems don't seem to matter...

The engine I bought this year (2001 90HP Johnson OceanPro) came with a 3-blade aluminum prop.  It's in good shape, but there are a couple of nicks on it from regular use by the previous owner. I was thinking of investing in a new prop in the spring.  Aside from durability, are there any other advantages to spending the extra money for a stainless?

It also depends where your boating.  If I was down in Little Egg Harbor where low water is very popular.. the alum. is what I would do.  If you use stainless and hit ground, the prop will survive but you will damage your lower unit... With an Alumi., that will break off first and save your lower unit.  Since my boating is out of AH, mostly deep water channels... I do the stainless.

I have had both 3 and 4 on my boat.  I eventually settled with a SS 3.  The major difference you will see between and 3 and 4 is the 4 will give you a better hole shot but you will lose top end.  Where the 3 will give less hole shot but more top end.

When you are buying a prop find someone who will lend you different blades and pitches so you can test each to see the difference.

I found a 3 that was a good match for my boat, it is SS and is a perfect balance of hole shot and top end.

Thanks. I am dealing with a place who will only charge $20 to send back a prop  buy from them and replace with new different pitch.

Should only take me 1 or 2 tries to get it right. I am banking on my 1st guess being correct.
