Hi All,

Being that Surf Fishing is my thing, I am going to try to dedicate more time to fishing the basics and get away from trying new plugs and lures.

Example, fishing for stripers I have to make it a point to be on the beach before daybreak or around dusk and fish the night.  I was mainly a convenience fisherman this year and, yes, I caught fish but not like I should have.

Keep it simple will be my moto for the year.  I will be replenishing my tackle box with stuff I lost and tie enough bait rigs to last me the summer.  I have already began that process.  My go to rig is the fishfinder slider and a 3/0 to 6/0 circle hook.

Plus I will be trying one tip I pecked up at the NJ Seminar and that will be to rig up a couple AVA's with an inline circle hook.  Sounds interesting.

I will be posting more articles about the surf mainly targeting tactics you can try to make your outings more successful.

And I will also be taking out more people that want to learn the basics of surf fishing.  I have a good feeling about this year in more ways than one.  Good luck in trying new things, just remember to post it on the site good or bad.  This way people will know weather to try a new tactic or tip and not wast time or money.

Happy Catching

Paul

I'm on the fence about doing a Cod trip. It would be fun to fill the cooler with tasty fillets but deep water, heavy tackle, 20 oz sinkers and 24 hour trips are not really my bag...

Not that heavy but using 12-16 ounce jigs & bringing up some big cod is always fun. Especially when at the end of th day you have #1000 of fish in the box.

Most 6 pack trips out of Green Harbour are 10 hours.

^ that's funny stuff there!  hhppy

As for me, I'm going to continue the pursuit of my first fish off the beach.  I'd like to get out on a few trips, as well.  Finances will dictate how well that works out for me.

Summer, mid to end and off shore @ least 12-20 miles out in Northern NJ, ca be had a bit closer in the further south you go.

I have caught chicken dolphin at the Belmar Bell Buoy.  Though it's not an everyday event, they do come in close, also, they are a bit on the small size.  I wouldn't plan a trip for that close though. t^

I have caught 2-3 bluefish off the dock at KMB, doesn't mean I can plan on leaving the boat in the slip for every fishing trip :)

A lot depends on water temp and clarity, etc, but a majority of the mahi are caught in the Canyons off of NJ and they are 80 miles out.

There certainly is no dependable, or regular mahi fishery even in the mudhole.
basically a crap shoot when you go out.

An expensive one these days.

That is one of the reasons I don't do a lot of that type fishing.  It is hard to get a crew together for such an iffy catch situation.  t^
