New tactics for the new year?
« on: January 15, 2008, 11:30:47 AM »
Is anyone going to try something new this year? New place? New tactic?

I'm going to give fly fishing a serious effort this spring. I tried it here and there but not seriously. I figure a sinking line with a big fat fly alongside a bunker school should work pretty good...

With what might become of the fluke fishing this year I probably will be doing something not really new but more of.  Probably be doing more shark trips.

I try to get one or two in a year and usually don't do any because of the weather when I do plan a trip.  I figure if I plan more trips, more will fit into a good weather day.

I am tempted to go out far myself, weather permitting. Although I don't have much big game experience ???   I do have a 75 gal fuel tank with a single 350 crusader inboard. So I have the range..  t^

I paid more then 3.25 per last season.

My pops and I looking to do shark trip this year too.

His boat is in back of Raritan tho, so he is 12 miles from tip of hook right off the bat.

Would def be willing to split expenses (he has a bunch of standup gear, etc) and either jump in on a trip or have some jump on with us this season.

Mboy, I'm sure I will have some spots to fill for shark trips.  Shouldn't cost an arm and a leg, that is of course, unless you get too close to the shark.   TT^

I'll probably (hopefully) finally get around to picking up a 8' spinning rod & matching reel for throwing plugs along the south shore of Raritan Bay for the fall run of blues & bass. Guess I'll have to add a pair of waders to my purchase as well  ;D.

Depending on the fluke situation I might do a few things. I might just decide to fish ultralight with bucktails and have as much fun as possible using light tackle while bouncing small bucktails for them. Or I might just decide to finally get my #10+ and fish the reefs/rockpiles off the beachs.

Contemplating a few more out of state trips thatn what I normally do;

Late March/early April trip up to Green Harbour Mass for some cod.

Early June trip up to Quincy for big flounder.

Mid July trip out of Pt. Judith for bass & fluke (hopefully).

Mid August up to Lake Ontario for king salmon.

Mid/Late October down to the Outer Banks for yellowfin tuna.

Early November Pt. Judith for blackfish.

Now just to spring that on the wifey  ::) bngh

Since getting the new boat this past august, I have been trying to expand my saltwater repertoire.. This past fall, I put together a couple of wire line outfits, and had good success on bass and blues..This year, I want to expand that to trolling bunker spoons.. I've been told longer glass rods are preferred for this, which prompted another new pursuit..rod building.. I picked up a wrapping machine/lathe and will be attempting to build some bunker spoon rods over the winter..Also, while I've been flyfishing and tying flies for a long time, I plan on devoting more time to this in saltwater this coming year.. And as we can now get offshore more effectively , I hope to learn the ropes of Sharking.. One of the things I love the most about fishing is the constant learning!

I'm on the fence about doing a Cod trip. It would be fun to fill the cooler with tasty fillets but deep water, heavy tackle, 20 oz sinkers and 24 hour trips are not really my bag...

Definitly want to do a Steelhead trip in March and I'm heading up to Lake Champlain with a goup in June. I guess you could say I'm getting in touch with my inner fresh water fisherman this year too...
