Question, outboard Engine.

I decided to back up the boat into the slip this season to make it easier to get on and off the boat.  When I lift the engines, they become to close to the dock, so I decided to leave them in the water to prevent damage if the weather turns bad.  Is this good to do or will I get a ton of build up on them.  I haven't replaced the zinc oxides in about 2 seasons.  What is the life expectancy of the zinc.  I hate to turn the boat around in the slip just so I can lift the engines out of the water. Its a pain in the ass trying to get those ropes tied perfectly...

I'm pretty sure you want to keep them out of the so nothing builds up in  the inside of the intake..Most of the guys keep them up.. You may to short the bow lines to move her forward..

My only concern would be the water left inside the lower unit/water pump from the water level down.  I know when I raise mine  all that drains out.  Not sure if the zinc will help inside there...  But I would think not.

I always change the zinc's every year, better to be safe than sorry. I small price to pay for what could happen,

I always leave my engine up and have the same problem with the dock. Resolved this by docking head first.......it is a pain loading and off loading but prevents any damage, and I just pull around to the end of the pier to load my passengers, bait, etc.  Hope it helps

I used to dock her bow first every season, this year I wanted to try something different to make life easier while boarding.  I guess it's not going to work out like I thought.

I change my zincs yearly. They get a bit eaten up in my marina.

I have a similar problem in that my engine touches the water even when up (just the way it was installed). I have some gunk buildup that I clean off rather easily. I have in the past left the lower unit in the water. I would worry about electrolysis and barnacles. A good coat of wax helps.

I will be home later this week. I will call my mechanic and see if he sees any danger. BTW, he is a top of the line Yamaha mechanic.

I have the same problem with my outboards partially in the water even when there raised.Before I put it in the water the dealer puts some clear antifouling which seems to do the trick

Thanks for the input.  Let me know what your machanic says.  I hate to have to to bow in again.  I have very high rails on the bow and lifting the cooler with ice, fish, etc.. over it is a pain.

   Keep those engines up. You'll have growth in the water intakes in a matter of weeks, and when your engine temps start to rise because of insufficent water flow, KABOOM   $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

will i get growth this time of year when the water temp is this cold.  I have another idea to help fix the problem, just need time to get down there...

Hi Luna,

It is my observation that as long as th boat does not sit at the dock for a long time, everything is fine. Of course, running the boat gets rid of most of the junk on the engine, bottom, etc.

I fixed my problem and you can see in the pictures on the other board.  I got 2 more lines and tied them to my middle cleat, through the front pole ring, and back to the middle cleat and pulled it snug.  This will keep the engines from hitting the dock and my rear lines are pulled tight as well.

Like Capt, Ed Said.  With running them blows the crap out, and i'm sure that boat don't sit idle for more than a few days at a time
