Shark Gaff
« on: February 02, 2008, 08:56:05 AM »
I was thinking about this yesterday, not sure if they already sell something like this... How about a large gaff hook attached to a pole, but removable once you gaff the shark, you can pull the pole out while the Gaff Hook stays attached ..Now attached to the gaff hook is also a chain and anchor buoy, so now when you pull the gaff handle out, all thats remaining is the Gaff hook, chain, and anchor buoy on the shark... to help tire the shark.  When that is done, just cut the leader and follow the ball until he tires.  Same theory as the harpoon and 50 gallon drum in the Jaws movie.

It seems simple enough to make..

Any thoughts or similar ideas.

They are called Flying gaffs (altho traditionally the removeable gaff head is tied off to a cleat). They have been around for at least 50 years :)

i know about the flying gaffs tied to the cleat, just thought to tweak it a bit by adding a chain and anchor ball to it.. who needs this thing thrashing around at boat side when you can let me thrash around in open water and pick it up later..

good point ls3, but if there is a dying shark bleeding constantly in the open ocean, dont you think another shark or anything will come up and tear it to shreds?

I think the kegs and buoys were used years ago, before realizing to tire the shark out first. The purpose of the buoys or kegs were to manage the shark while he is green, without thrashing boat side. Matter of preference, I would guess. Probably pretty cool to see a mammoth shark swim off with a big keg keeping him afloat.  TT^

A good day of fishing is better than a bad day of fishing. A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work. That means work sucks!

flier first then a shot between the eyes and a tail rope. Make sure hesdead before you ring him in the boat i had a few come to life after we thought it was over. Once in the boat put a bucket over his head bleed and gut . fill stomache with ice. put ice around the body towels and spray with water.
