Nope. No license other then in freshwater and that is really just a tax. If you are only a saltwater user, you do not need a license. Do not pay for the boaters license if running in saltwater! Just need the safety cert.

Freshwater boaters license has been around for years, nothing new.

100-150 tells me that it is very likely I disagree.

Is this the same source that told you this last year?

Who is your source?

It would have to get passed in the state legislature and it would be public knowledge that something like that came up for a vote LONG before the actual vote.

The boat endorsement on your drivers license is only required to opearte a power boat in noon-tidal waters.  You need a NJ boat safety certificate (BSC) to operate a motor vessel in any NJ water, tidal or non-tidal.  The boat endorsement on you driver license comes from the state motor vehicle.  Supposedly they will not issue this endorsement unless you have a BSC. As mentioned previously the boat endorsement as been around for years and had not requirement other than to pay the "tax".  The BSC is more recent and has been phased in over the past several years.  By June 1 of this year anyone born after Jan 1 1949 is required to have it.  June 1 2009 will require everyone regardless of age to have it.  It must be in your possession whenever you operate a motor vessel.  Most courses are $60 to $80 with the test at the end.  You can take the test out option without the course if you meet the requirements for $25.  Both options are available at many locations.

What if you have the boaters endorsement on your licence already.  I got mine years ago before you needed a test to take it.  Is it still valid or would I have to test to keep it.

Their was never a test for it in the 1st place. It is just a tax. Plain and simple. If you don't use a boat in Freshwater, it is a waste of money.

Luna, what you have on your license is only an endorsement.  That means you can operate a power boat in non-tidal waters in NJ.

The item that you test for is a Boating Safety Certificate.  It is NOT a license.

They are two separate things.  The Boating Safety Certificate is mandatory for operating any power boat any where in NJ.  It also goes by birth year as to when you need to have this.  In 2009, everyone will need it.  This year, anyone born after 1949 needs it.

When I went to DMV to renew my license this past November I needed to show a copy of my boaters safety certif to keep the boat endorsement on my license.

That is correct, Wreckfish.  Motor Vehicle will not put the endorsement on anymore without the Safety Certificate.

You need the Safety Certificate for the endorsement on your  license, but you don't need the endorsement on your license for the Safety Certificate.

Do you use a boat in freshwater?

If not, you are wasting your $$ with the endorsment.

The endorsement is cheap, so you might as well have it to go along with the safety certificate.

I took a course back in the early 90s, and recieved a card from the state that expired the day I got my drivers licence. The course was all saltwater based. I lost the card before I got my license, and forgot about it. Does anybody have any idea what that could have been?

I used to fish in Fresh water, so I got it years and years ago and just keep renewing it every year...
