Oswego NY info...
« on: February 13, 2008, 08:45:04 PM »
Just got my annual salmon/steelhead trip plans finalized tonight.  Heading up first week in August.
This year I want to head up a day early and try some smallie fishing in the Oswego river.
If anyone has any info on fishing the river it would be much appreciated, thanks.

I'm told that the Oswego gets unbelievably full of Sheepshead in the summer that it's hard to get through them to catch anything else.

The Salmon has some nice smallies plus you have an outside shot at a steehead or local raindow.

I have been up there in Oct. and have caught Sheepshead, while fishing for Salmon. I don't know about steelies in the summer in the river, I know they are in the rivers now. They do good on Walleye at some point in the summer, not sure of the exact timeing. t^

I've never really targeted smallies on the Oswego, but I've caught a few in the fall over the years while fishing for steelhead..Although guys up there tell me that the smallmouth fishing in the river is great in the summer..If you're bringing your boat you should have no trouble finding bass.. Usually I'm trolling  for salmon when up there that time of year, but I've fished for bass some from Oswego to Fairhaven.. We would troll the shoreline just off the first dropoff with crankbaits like Shad Raps, watching the fishfinder for rockpiles, humps and other structure..When we hook up or see a nice piece of structure we stop and cast to the area..Be sure to have lures that look like crawfish, and natural baitfish patterns..jigs are hard to beat.. If you are going to fish from shore, I hear below the dam is real good for smallies..theres also some nice pocket water below the wall..I'd look for weedlines near the seams of the slower current.. As the other guys pointed out, They do get some slob walleye on the river and Oswego harbor too.. Through most of the summer thats mostly a night game.. trolling or casting stickbaits is the hot ticket there.. If you take the boat and get blown off the lake as is common, try heading west about 15 mi. to fairhaven state park ..There's a sweet state ramp there on Little Sodus bay..Pretty protected and full of Largemouth smallmouth, perch, and pike, There's a few piers and seawalls to fish from there as well, and a pond that feeds to the lake that used to be pretty good for largemouths and pike.. Have a great trip! t^
