what brand of braid do you use
« on: March 05, 2008, 09:21:35 PM »
So many more choices of braid to use than power pro on the market, what kind do you use and what advantages does it have over power pro.

Lots of posters on this site swear by PowerPro.

I use Pline and will continue to use it.

Tuff Line XP and this stuff I got fro Australia on ebay. Which has been good the 1 or 2 trips I was able to use it on so far. Nice multi colored too. Looks nice on my blue Avet sx :)

I also have PP on a couple of reels, but find it inferior to Tuff Line XP (color fades FAST and not consistent in quality IMO.

Have been using Power Pro for five years and never had a problem.  As with any product you can have a bad lot.  I am now using yellow and really like it as I can see the line in the water.  Always have a fluoro leader before it.

Power Pro is my choice.  I switched everything over last year and never went back.  This stuff is great.  But I do use a Fluorocarbon shock leader about 3' on everything.

I keep trying new things.  I currently have suffix and PP loaded on a couple of reels.  No complaints.  Suffix has lasted through a long striper and tog season.  But my BIL had problems with his.

This year I'm going to try fireline crystal and see what happens.

grtn,  I started using braid last season. It takes awhile to get used to the stuff. Ive been using power pro 40lb test in green. This season I spooled up a new reel with the line and used it for trolling striper's in North Carolina. I cant figure out what happened but I wound up with a underlaying knot in the spool with around 60 yards out. I tried forever to clear it up with no success. I wound up cutting it all off. bngh bngh
I also spooled up a small Shimano reel with Stren Microfuse 18lb test in Glacier blue. That I picked up at the fishing seminar. It a nice line with a waxy feel. I need to use it some more to see if I will buy more.
Braided line is only going to get better and better as time goes on.  chrz

We sell more Power Pro then any other brand by a significant margin.

The second best seller is Sufix and that is what I use on lighter tackle, under 30 lbs.  Over 30 lbs I use Power Pro as casting distance is not an issue.

The only problem I had with the braided line was the line embedding itself into the spool.  Until I tried setting the drag a little lighter.  Once I did that I haven't had any problems since.  It seems the line being so slick has a tendency it embed.  Just a little tweak and remember each reel is different so experiment.

Not a "true" braid but my choice is Fireline TT^
14# test on my fluke gear and 30# for my tog'n reels.  Works great on spinning and conventional reels.  A bit stiff at first but "breaks in" quickly.

Some say it's ticker than other braids but to make a true comparison, you'd have to put 30# Fireline against Power Pro in 50or60# test as FL is way under-rated.  I can use 60# mono for a long leader attached to the Fireline via a connection knot and bust the 60# mono at the rig before the FL or knot. TT^ TT^

Only negative I've had with FL is with the hi-vis green version.  Seemed to be weaker than the same pound-test in their regular smoke color 5hrug
Pink works just fine t^

Tried a few different brands of braid, but none impressed me enough to switch from Fireline.  Had bad spools of Power pro years ago, actual visible weak spots and clumps of material on the line.
Stealth seemed thicker than most other brands, yet slick and easy to untangle.  Seemed to sink differently though.

Tuff Line XP worked well and a few reels still have that on it, but get Fireline once it's time to replace t^

For the guys who have had problems with power pro.  There was a post up here not too long ago about counterfeit power pro being sold a while back.  Perhaps you guys had a few spools of that and that was the reason for the problems.   5hrug

I have been using power pro for years with no problems at all.

Good point Joe,  I have had no problem with it either.  I guess it does not matter where you get it from I guess that stuff could be anywhere.  With money tight these days any shop or store could be trying to save a buck and purchase that stuff not totally realizing that it could jeopardize their business if found out.

QC at Power Pro was an issue back in the day.  This is going back probably 7 years.  Saw pics and first hand witnessed quite a few "bad spools" of PP.  Counterfeit ones were more recent.

Telling you, GLOBS of stuff fused into the line and spots that you can see were just ready to break.

Tuff Line XP is identical to Power Pro except a bit less expensive IMHO.

Thanks for all the good input, I found this link that talked about the different types of braid. I may try an 8 strand type.  Some newer types of braid have a coating that protects the line better. I currently use powerpro and find it looking very poor toward the end of the season.
