Outrageous Prices for lures...
« on: March 16, 2008, 11:16:53 PM »
Hi All,

I have just been reading reports on a couple of lures the SPRO BBZ-1 and Jerry Rango's 10" & 13" Tool.

Both seem way over the line price wise but the TOOL is rediculous.  I loose lures pretty mich on a regular basis in the suds I would hate to loose one that coxts that much no matter how well it works.

Check this out...

SPRO's version is in the 30 - 40 dollar range.

This is worse than the rising gas prices.

There has been a lot of chatter on another board I was just lurking on.  It seems that SPRO sort of was knocking off the other lure.  They look very similar.  Still I would not pay $100 or $300 dollars for any lure.

I cannot imagine anyone paying that price for 1 lure.

But, I guess they do.

I'm looking around to see what the wholesale price is on them.

None of the distributors I deal with seem to have them.

Hmmmmmm, wonder why.

Might as well throw a dressed treble on this.

At first I thought that the lure maker was an artist and these were limited edition or something.  This is ridiculous! I use rebel lures because they are cheaper and work!  Also, this is one of the reasons I tie my own flies, their cheap.
PS - That's what that part of the alphabet would look like if there where no Q or R.

These lures are targeted at the hardcore trophy largemouth bass hunters on the west coast.  Many of the lakes in the California Delta such as Lake Casitas and Lake Castaic hold huge bass!  There have been a ton caught there that weighed in the upper teens, with a few over twenty pounds!

It has long been the belief of many largemouth aficionados that the next world record will come from this area.  Some think it already has, but the records were denied for one reason or another.  Can you say Monica Oswald? ;)

One reason why these fish get so big (other than the perfect climate and environment) is that they get to feed on an abundance of stocked trout.  It is illegal to use these trout for bait.  So a number of years ago some of these guys started making these homemade swimbaits to imitate the local trout.  This became a cottage industry.  And now many of the larger manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon.

$300 for a lure?  That's way too expensive for me!  But if I caught the most sought after freshwater record in the world on it, I think it would definitely be worth it!! ;D

I picked up 25 imitation/look alike Spro bucktails from 3/4-6 ounces at the Somerset show for $46.

This to go with another dozen I bought from the same vendor at the Rockland show should keep me well supplied for bucktailing fluke.
