Liferaft/EPIRB Powerbuys.

I've been looking to add these 2 items to the safety equip. for our boat.. I found this Powerbuy offer on another site, and it seems like a good deal, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone is interested.. Also, if anyone knows of a better deal anywhere else, I would appreciate a heads up..But I haven't seen any better deals so far... I hope the mods don't mind me posting a link to another site, but this seems like a good opportunity.. I'm likely gonna go for the "Coastal Commander 6 Valise"  raft, and the "McMurdo Smartfind Category II" EPIRB.. Any other suggestions will be welcomed.

 when shopping do the research for the epirbs,, i was looking last year and there weas somgthing to do with the older models that made them undesirable. cant remember for sure but i think they where getting phased out or had limited range, or some crap. damn i need to find out about it again.

The epirb they are showing is the latest tech.

As far as the lifraft goes, good thing to have if you are going to Canyon or pretty far out, but I certainly wouldn't need something like to to do the inshore fishing I do. I don't even need an epirb for what I do with my boat.

BOE- the place that is offering the raft/eprib is top notch. I bought my BenneTt tabs and my Lowrance lmf-400 nmea 200 gauge from them.

Thanks for the input on the epirb and BOE  mike..I have never dealt with them , but folks on THT seem to hold them in high regard.. Nick, I agree the raft may be overkill..But we are planning on going a bit further offshore this year..maybe not the canyons right away, but thinking like the far reaches of the Mudhole, etc maybe some overnighters..It would make the family feel better.. It seems like a big expense for things you pray to never use,  until I realize that i've spent at least that amount already in the off-season just on tackle!.. I'm such an addict

Yes, I keep my boat in Brick at a lagoon just south of Havens Cove (which is south of Mantaloking bridge) and North of Kettle Creek.

The type of epirb that (I think Luna Sea) was referring to is the 121/243 MHZ type. There is only a little over a year to go for 121.5/243 MHz EPIRBs; on 1 February 2009 the satellite receivers for those frequencies will be switched off.

The newest type are 406...see that now back on topic!

If you can afford the raft go for it. I would guess your life and your passengers are worth more than 2K. I have the REVERE OFFSHORE OCEAN 6 MAN CANISTER with cradle. We do a lot of offshore night fishing along with offshore trips in November, and December. I do not want to get in that cold or dark water, better chance of survival in the raft and with an epirb. Best investment in your life you can make. Even if you only go out 3-7 miles your boat takes on water and you have no radio contact to give a distress, or insight of other boaters, you are at risk of hyperthermia then death. I rather abandon ship into my life raft. I also use a ditch bag this has in it at the very least; hand held submersible VHF, submersible gps, submersible flash light, hand held compass, water proof tri fold charts for the areas that a fish, flare kit, signal mirror, whistles, strobe lights, inflatable PFD, knife, water, power bars, first aid kit, electrical tape, emergency blanket, parachute chord, change of clothes, and a few other odds and ends.   Better to have and not need it, than need it and not have it. You can never be too safe! You only have 1 life to live. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the great advise Capt. Mike, thats kinda how I'm thinking..The episode last week with the clammer going down off PP. really got me thinking about these items.. Reports indicate they're EPIRB and raft turned a real life threatener into a fairly routine rescue..I've already assembled most of the items on your list for our ditch bag (although my bro hates that name..we gonna call the God Forbid bag)..only other item we need is a handheld VHF.. Fortunately, my brother and I share all boat expenses so that helps soften the blow. Thanks again for all the input.
