Minnow Trap

[Reckless]

  Anyone use this type of trap? Wire comes apart in the middle. If so any luck with it? What type of bait? Any help appreciated!!

Yes they work fine..........use pieces of bunker, smashed crabs,mussels....also I put 4-6 pieces of white styrofoam in (small 1x1 pieces) as a visula attractant..........

used to be able to use hunks of female horsecrabs with the eggs and the pots would be jammed solid......

I fish my pots in the small tidal feeder creeks, works much better

Yep, standard trap been around for ages.

Bread works fine too.

Anywhere in a grassy.marshy area works well.

I have a nice spot at my marina to load up on them. Only takes a few mn.

I KNOW Luna Sea is going to jump in. I am sure he uses them to catch the monster killies up in North Jersey.

A can of cat food is excellent bait in a minnow trap.

Poke 4 or 5 holes on each side and it lasts for a long time.

I go up north to Patterson Plank Road, behine Stilettos, load bread in the trap your talking about, and within 15 minutes have all the killies you want, some in the 2" mark.  You will see he killies swim around the trap, as soon as one goes in, the others will follow.

they do have monster killies there, the only problem for me since I moved down south is catching them on a friday, then keeping them alive until saturday morning.  It is a pain with some casualties.  But well worth it when I have time to get up there.  If I was you Mike, give it a try.  Go during the day when Stilettos is closed, park in there parking lot, and but a couple traps in the small part of the creep directly behind the building and work your way to the mouth.  If there there, you wont need more then half hour. Don't leave the traps unattended because the tide change there is very, very quick and before you know it, your trap will be out of the water.

The pots work great we use to uise them all the time.  A great place was in Keyport right next to the fish market was always a great place to put a couple.

We always used gooey white bread smushed into a ball.

the problem w/ bread is when you put them in holding tanks they always puke it up and it makes a mess and you need extra filters to clean it

I guess thats true today but back then we used to keep them in a floating pot we called a Killie pot with slats and a door on top with a screen bottom.  Never had a problem.

I used to use those but my killies always got stolen so I set up a holding tank in my house ,I can keep about 100 alive for 2 weeks or more ,this way I always have bait on hand

this could be true, but you will have bouncer in the parking lot wodering what your doing behind there building.

i noticed that, but when I caught them, i went straight to the boat.
