for those of you in south jersey, try graveling point. walk down the beach, put the trap in the shallow creek to the right. i would have a 5 gallon bucket filled in less than an hour. also seine there, would have thousands of spearing  in minutes

Leave em in over night and catch an eel or 2

There are some good spots in Keyport, especially in the creek for you this season Catfish.

The opnly palce I have seen as much (or more even) bait is @ Young GUll's marina.

You have peanuts splashing at one end of the dock, spearing busting the surface 5' away at the other end, then have mullet and snappers mixed in with the peanuts.

Probably a boat load of kEllies as well.

Keyport dock last year, we had baby weakfish mixed in with snappers.  Loads of fun.  There are feeder creeks, I think one is on Broadway(is that the street?) in Keyport or streets in UB (Florence ave and Union Ave) that have creeks as well.

LOL -- I was busted once for calling them kellies.  .

Seining(is that how you spell it?) -- that's something I miss.  Use to do it years ago in the creeks off of Pebble Beach and catch a ton of bait and also caught blue claws that way, not a lot, but caught some.

There is plenty of bait rightin Matawan creek leading out to the bay.

I have a seining yet and poles I have yet to use, but feel it coming on this season. Especially during a long weekend when I can gather a ton of bait and keep it fresh for the weekend (I hate using frozen spearing).

AKA: killifishes, cyprinodontidae, killies, minnies etc.
 
With the proper hooks and/or rigs, they are used to catch a variety of fish, including: fluke, perch, fresh water bass and pickeral, and more. Often keeping them alive long enough to be useful bait is the hardest part, especially during the summer months. There are several things that can be done to insure that most of your bait minnows will survive.

I haven't used Killies for fluke in years man.

I forgot all about them.

It all depends on where you are...think in So Jersey they are called mudminnows....No Jersey its killies.

My Grandfather used to call them 'hardheads'.  But, like the saying goes, 'You say tomato, I say...

i'm in south jersey and i call them killies. i bought a 16 foot seine net and two cheap broomsticks, and me and my son seine everywhere we find shallow water. in a few days we have over a hundred small ziploc bags full of frozen spearing for all of his snapper fishing needs. he is always amazed at the variety of species we catch. last year, down on mystic island, we caught 30 or 40 of what appeared to be baby stripers. we took one (the rest we gently put back) to tip's in west creek, and two other tackle shops, and no one could identify it for us. you want bait for the whole season, seine in mystic island, by graveling point

killies became difficult to get from the bait store and very expensive, which is why i swiched to the Gulp mullet, and use squid with large smelt.  Largest 2 fluke came from a smelt/squid combo.
