Advice on new Rod and reel (Conventional)
« on: March 27, 2008, 07:53:54 PM »
Looking to get a new setup for boat fishing stripers, some blues, tog,etc

Poles I am considering are Seeker BA-85, St Croix Musky Stick, Loomis PBR844C or PBR785C

paired with either

Shimano TYR20, or TOR30
Also checked out Daiwa saltist STT 40

Anyone experienced with any of these? Thanks for the help  t^

The only rod I have any experience using is the Seeker, very nice rod. Would be perfect for what you want it for.

As far as the reels go, I am not a big fan of either Shimano or Daiwa.

Not saying there no good, I have just had bad experiences with any reels I have ever bought by those two companies. And that includes some of their high end products.

I can def reco an Avet MXL most likely for what you want.

What type of boat you fishing from? Party or private?

I have heard A LOT Of god things about Calstar's. 700L would be pretty nice for what you want. Paired with an Avet MXL should do you right.

St. Croix Muskie rod is nice as well. I picked one up myself this winter.

I am sure the Loomis are great too. No experience with one.

I do have myself a Nice slightly used custom GUSA sw70mh on the way.

I would lean toward the Calstar 700l as that will most likely be my next rod purchase (or a rod based on that blank).

If you go for the Torium, I would check the 20 instead of the 30.  I think the 30 would be a bit large for your purpose.

as for a rod i love my stunami great price lots of back bone and very senative i drift 10-14 oz for fluke and feel everthing i wish i had gone with a better reel a okuma cv30 im not real happy with that but the rod was a great choice i use 50lb power pro and you feel every little tick i just cant justify paying 200-$300 for a loomis or other exspensive rods the stunami ran me like $40 at harlee rod in jersey city

I have a Seeker BA-80. Great rod but I only use it occasionally for eeling stripers, deepwater fluke and once in a while for blackfish. Have it paired with a Penn 310.

I have about 20 rod and reel combos.  A friend of mine who has been fishing longer than I have been alive turned me onto GLoomis rods and Shimano Calcutta reels a few years ago.

I bought one a few years back and I could not put it down.  I just bought another exact setup last season.

I have the Gloomis PBR844C rod paired with a Shimano Calcutta 400 reel spooled with braid and a fluoro leader.

I use this setup for everything from Fluke to Stripers and it is fantastic.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.
