Keeping Clams Alive.

I usually shuck the extra clams and use them for the next trips chum.  What if I put them in a milk crate and hung it over the side of the boat in the water.  Would this keep them alive, and if so, for how long..  Would i have to send it down to the bottom..

they are4 fine in the bag just tie it off to a cleat and let them hang ,they will live for a while

We used to put em in an old burlap or onion sack on the bottom.

i did this last year, 2 days they died and stunk like hell.

They need to be on the bottom.

There are no nutrients for them at the surface.

they will not live unless on the bottom ,if you hang on top of water let a friend pull them up because it will smell like hell

If you wait to long and they die, it won't smell pretty. TRUST ME!

yep.. from that trip.. I tied it off, sent to bottom, and didn't make it.  I thought maybe I take them out of the burlap back and put in a milk crate instead.

Burlap already failed for me last season.  This is why I am looking for some different recommendations.

this I agree with, but my refrig. isn't big enough to hold food for my family and a half bushel of huge clams.

Keep extra in the fridge crisper drawer. Last's around 7 to 10 days.Watch the water from ice melting-will take them right out.

As per your 1st post, you stated you hung them over the side.

Any type of bag, container with large enough holes for nutrients to get through will work.

IE: Burlap sack, onion sack, milk crate, killie cart, crab and/or lobster pot, an old screen from your house sewn into a bag type object.

I suppose even an old hair net would do.

I have tied them up and left them on the water and gone back 4 days later and picked them up and they were fine just zip tie the top of the burlap bag and tie them off

I did.  I took a burlap bag and hung it over the side of the boat until it hit bottom.  AND?

Is it possible that the reason this failed last season for me was because I maybe had too many in the burlap bag?
