I replace my water pump every other year. I do my thermostats every year. I believe Yamie recommends every two or three years on the pump. They say to inspect it every year. I don't know how you can inspect it without dropping the lower unit. If you have that done to inspect, you might as well replace the pump while it is apart.

As Joe said every other year and I also relace the thermostat and check all the seals, yes you have to get into the lower unit.........not a big thing, but because I run charters I have the MEchanic give it the once over...never be to safe TT^

Yep, every 2 years or 200 hours is the reco for the Tstats and pump. I had the marina do my pump, but figure the Tstats I can do myself no problem.

Have you ever had it done?

Do you know what happens when it fails?

You get to shop for a new engine.

Artie not too hard to do it,,,, i had a 140 I/O on my boat and did it myself,,, not bad to do ,,,, but defiantly a must if you run a boat, 2-3 years is theyr recomended life cycle,,,,,,who knows how old yours is cause the previous owner might not have changed it,,,

from experience i'll tell you that if it goes,,

the impeller will go,
the complete water pump housing and tubes will go
the bellows will blow out (nneded special tool $75 to intall them)
the engine will over heat and stall out. Tow it back
cylinder head will crack or warp

yes it happened to me,, i did all the work myself  including replacing the cylinder head,, saved a ton  of money (like thousands) but still spent like $600 or so dollars

I got lucky that i found a place in washington that sold me a completely new head complete with valves and springs and all for $300 plus $75 shipping.. just had to but the gasket kit

if you replace it before it craps out itll cost you between $30 to $50 for the impeller and a few more bucks for lower unit oil...

Overheating an outboard is FAR worse then an I/O.

Outboard definately worse. If the engine stops from overheating, Just get a new powerhead. bngh
