Squid
« on: April 09, 2008, 05:22:51 PM »
When you by squid from a market do you do anything with them? Do they get soaked in something? Or just cut them up and freeze them? I thought about letting the squid dry out then soak in gulp juice? Probably wouldnt smell to good though. 5hrug 5hrug

I buy fresh at the Asian bait store.... I mean supermarket  ::)
Whatever I dont use that day I freeze whole. Thaw out next time out and cut into strips on the boat.  Put strips into a container with clean seawater. The seawater toughens the strips a bit and gets them a little whiter in color.
I've tried soaking them in everything on the market, bunker oil, shedder oil etc and never noticed a difference.
Notice I said "in clean seawater"  NOT the 2 stroke soaked stuff at your slip or launch ramp!!!

Just an FYI. Maybe not all but a lot of the Asian Market's squid was frozen and thawed out when they display it. Hard to find actual fresh squid there.

I get the 3 pound frozen boxes from the super markets and use them whole. I make up a double hook rig where the top hook slides so the bait runs true when hooked up.

The larger squid from the Asian markets, I strip out. To my knowledge, a lot of the Asian markets receive their squid frozen and thaw them out to put in the display cases. The one in PA has a sign on the display case stating, pre-frozen. They are not frozen at the time.

Me too! The fluke really seem to prefer the LONGER strips gives them more to gnaw on.
Sometimes I strip out the smaller ones but usually whole.
