Night fishing
« on: April 25, 2008, 08:13:05 AM »
Not the greatest of nights.  Met up with Caster(BIL Richie) and Jigamafish(Joe).  We got our bait in GK.  They were in 35 feet of water.  We snagged what we needed and headed out.

A ton of boats outside of GK so we went searching.  Came up on some marks and dropped the hooked.  BIL Richie was on in 5 minutes and landed his first keeper of the year on a bunker head/circle hook.  15 minutes later, I hooked up on a bunker chunk/circle hook combo to land my first keeper from the raritan bay.  Then a bluefish invasion.  All the 9 to 10 pounds blues you wanted.  We had around 3-4 reel nice run offs but no fish from those run offs.

Who ever says that bluefish don't hit bunker heads and they don't bite at night ... obviously doesn't use bunker heads at night ....

Great to get out.  Beautiful night for April.  Things should improve in a week or so.  This is just the start.

ps -- I'll be at Foodtown by the front door with a can collecting for gas money.

Good fishing with you guys.  Joe, thanks for the "smack" sandwiches.  Richie -- thanks for NOT sharing your sandwiches.   :p

almost forgot 1 thing ... don't leave clams on your boat. OOOOFFFFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.  thud

I never heard of this either...  Bluefish at night is very popular.. and bluefish will also take a bare hook when they are in a frenzy
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

The theory is the bluefish is much more active during the day.  Finding a bare hook at night is hard to do in anykind of frenzy.

One of the main reasons to use a bunker head for stripers is because the bluefish tear apart the bunker from the tail forward, leaving the bunker head to sink to the bottom.  That's where Mr. Bass is waiting.

That's when when live lining, the bluefish can actually help.  Let the bluefish rip the bunker apart, let it fall and hang on.

Good thoughts and nice report. Think like a bigol hungry bass. The heads are by far the best chunks. I was out last night and went out as far as the 19, saw nada, then set up off UB with limited (no) success. Guess I shoulda kept going, over to GK....
