cuban yo-yos
« on: May 02, 2008, 09:51:11 PM »
anyone ever fish with cuban yoyos?

i was sitting here remembering a few years back fishing with my dad, and we always kept a few of these rigged in the car, in case we both had the itch and didnt want to pull out the rods.

i was looking around online and I found a place that has them decently cheap, if you buy 10, its just under 2 dollars a piece. I am about to place an order, does anyone want one?

they are very simple to use.

they look like that but unrigged.

I saw them online a day or two ago. Was wondering how they would work.

If you would, put up a demo/post on how they are used.

the cuban reel is a very simple concept. let me see if this will work.

that is the side view of the cuban reel, notice that the side on the left is beveled.

you would rig this however you want, i like to keep mine weighted and it made for better casting if I needed it to.

what I did was I would hold it in my left hand, the non beveled side lip being overlapped by my thumb and the inside of the reel lying on my index finger. in my right hand I would grab about 3 ft of line and start lassoing above my head (be careful for eyes, faces, heads, poles, etc etc), I would let it go as it reached its apex just before passing over my head, I would slowly start reeling back in.

the other way was you would just let a sinker fall beneath the boat, bridge, etc and have the bait at any depth you saw fit.

Diego,
I see BassPro is selling them!
I am coming on to this thread late, did you pick these up already?
How would you reel in?  Just wind it up?
Are they rigged with line and hook/sinker?  I just picked up a telescopic surf rod/reel and a travel light spinning combo for the car but this may be also good to include in a camping/survival/emergency pack.  Any one watch that survival reality show in Alaska on Discovery?  I think if these people didn't have back-up with them, they wouldn't survive very long-and they even have lodging!

One day I'll have a photo of me and my 1st Striper up instead of this cat.

I saw someone using one of those last November. He caught a striper on it.

last year i waas fishing the Pier in Princess Bay and this mexican dude came up with fishen line wrapped around a beer can with a pen thru it... and was catching porgies and snappers...

i was friggen cracken up....

then when i hooked into a fish ... he got in my way... and jumped in my spot that i had for a couple of hours... then he did it again and i kinda lost my cool and told him he was gonna go for a swim...

this is another reason on top of many that fishing that pier is horrible...

its worth walken down to the light tower in front of the cliffs...   good hole right there... from surf or boat... just watch the rocks and the sand bar...
