Poppers
Advanced Top Water
by: Chad T. Keogh (Badchad)

To modify my poppers, I remove the stock treble hooks and replace them with a #6 Mustad Triple Grip treble on the front and a #6 Mustad Feather Triple Grip on the rear. Again, the feathers can increase the odds of getting a hit when you aren’t even moving the bait.

My technique for fishing a popper is very similar to the one I employ for waking baits. Cast it, let is sit until the rings disappear, slight twitch, but then begin popping it in erratically with your rod tip low to keep the line in front of the lure under the surface. If the line in front of the popper disturbs the surface, it may alert the bass that something isn’t quite right.

Are you connecting directly to the popper with a snap swivel, tied directly or ary you using mono or flouro to the popper?

Sorry for the questions, as I like to tie on a short leader of flouro about 36" and sometimes I will put a dropper loop and attach a teaser about 18 or so inches up from the popper.

This looks like a topic for a freshwater popper, which can be tied directly to the mono line.

I still remember my first largemouth bass strike on a calm day, on a frog colored Hula Popper up at boy scout camp on Durham pond....wow!
