Long Island Fluke 5/18 (late report)
« on: May 19, 2008, 09:17:09 PM »
Was lucky enough to get out on a 1/2 day split charter aboard the Lori C from Stony Brook to get into the early season fluke action in the LI Sound.  I managed 2 keepers up to #5.5, while releasing 7 or 8 "jumbo shorts" in the 18-20 inch range.  Marshall, the gentleman sharing this photo with me, bagged 3 keepers, including a #6.75 which I didn't have a chance to photograph.    This 20.5 inch limit is ridiculous, but we still managed to have a blast catching these fish on light tackle consisting of 3/8-3/4 oz spros, and lead heads dressed with pink curly tail gulps that were tipped with spearing.  Sea robins were also prevalent and only one bluefish made an appearance :)

Nice report Crabcake. These regs are a real killer. It would be easier to swallow if there was a REAL reason for them to be as stringent as they are.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you guys have the same numbers of nice fish that we have here right now. I can't begin to tell you how many 18"-19" fish we had to throw back.

One thing for sure is that I'm gonna come down to NJ to fluke fish more than once this Summer.  Can't wait!
