dropper flies with plugs
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:48:46 PM »
this year im going to start fishing dropper flies in front of my plugs.  i know its nothing new but ive yet to try it on a consistent basis. dont know why i dont always use this method considering i tie the flies all the time.  but i dont see any disadvantage by using this technique. all positives i think.

I almost alway use a teaser when I am pluging ,you would be surprised how many time a fish will take the teaser over the plug, last year in may when the big blues moved in I hit a double header at the hook they were both 10 lbs or better I thought I had a huge bass for a couple min.

yeah, ive basically come to the conclusion that it doesnt make sense to not use a teaser. i cant think of any disadvantage.  some people say it will cause a non feeding fish to strike just b/c of the competition of another fish (plug) chasing bait (teaser).

Hi All,

Please find attached a picture of a teaser rig. Cutting the dropper loop is optional. I am into fly tying, when I get the chance, so I use my own teasers. They can be bought in local Tackle Shops for $1.00-$4.00 or so. We can discuss which ones to use at length.

Have fun,

Capt. Ed

i would go with a deciever, surf candy or a just a regular tied bucktail with no weight.  i think the big thing is no weight...

I can use more details on this subject since I never tried it.  I've heard great things.
PS - That's what that part of the alphabet would look like if there where no Q or R.

You can  use a dropper like the diagram. But I usually tie my main line to a swivel then a leader to my lure. You can tie a short leader to the swivel and attach your teaser to that short leader. You can use anything small and light enough as a teaser! Besides flys, I use rubber eels,fin-s,red gills, etc.

alot of times I prefer a palamar knot and use the tag end to tie the dropper for some reason I have more luck w/ it that way ,mabeye it has better action but I think I have More confidence in it

The advantage the dropper loop has is that it's simple to change your teaser. Another hint: keep your dropper at least 3 ft. from your lure. seems to work better!
