Fish you HATE to Handle
« on: May 27, 2008, 09:36:20 AM »
The reason why I bring this topic up is that yesterday on the beach in Lavalette a guy caught a 15# bluefish on a plug, got every hook in the fish, and was wrestling it like a bear on the beach just to get the hooks out.

At one point two guys were holding it down as the guy tried to pull the hooks out with scissors (I'm dead serious).  I had to step in like a real nosey SOB, told the guys to hold my rod, and carefully pulled the remaining trebles (with my hands) out of the bluefish and in 15 seconds tossed it back to swim away to their amazement.  They were dead scared of the fish's maw, which I can completely understand.

This brings up something I see regularly, people HATING to handle certain species...  A friend of mine on another charter boat decked a 20# monkfish over the weekend, and seeing that monster would start my list of fish I would hate to try to handle... since I've only SEEN one monkfish in my years on the water.

But ones I regularly FEAR, even after years of seeing them/handling them:

STARGAZERS

SPINY DOGFISH

Anyone care to add/elaborate to this list?

Skates
EELS
Any bony spiny ugly looking specie. So stargazer and monk fish would be on this list.

Out comes the skirt, a rag and pliers or de-hooker.

Capt Allen, you nailed it. Spineys and stargazers. pretty much everything else is good to go. With the exception of a really large shark that is still had some breath in him.  ;D

Thats it for me, the spiny dogs and stargazers are read nasties.  That is why I have a gripper.  Those stargazers can be very dangerous do not touch them behind the eyes as their are two points that will give you a nasty sting.

i see a strgazer and i just cut the line, no fooling around. skates have a nasty looking mouth too. how about oyster crackers in the bay??? seen those?  down in florida we would catch clownfish. they look pretty, but they have a set of choppers that'll take a finger off

Spiney dogfish for sure.

Although I don't fear them but I'm always careful gripping them are sea robins-especially the bigger one. They have that big spike on each of their gill plates. If you ever get finned by one of them, you'll know it. I always grip them with a rag to remove the hook.

Stargazers and oyster crackers are the nastiest for me.  Sea robins are no problem.  Just lip them like a largemouth. ;D

Had some skate on the grill yesterday in a little butter with some Old Bay....MMMMMMM . They are absolutely delicious. I wear a rubber dipped glove when I clean and skin them. This is the first year that I have tried skate wing but I am looking forward to coming up with some good recipes

Skolman A tip on the Sea Robins, Lip them just as you would a Large or small mouth Bass. The only thing that bothers me is not handleing the dog fish but they bleed like a stuck pig.....

Great Topic t^

Spiny Dogs, they are a nightmare. Just the sound of that spine scratching the gelcoat as they barrel roll on deck rolling your line up with them...ARGH >:(

Skates, a barb in a flexible tail is never fun to deal with.

you can buy pliers at almost any store.  They work pretty good and don't cost that much.

sean, how did you cook and clean the skate ?
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
