Point Pleasant Canal 5/30
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:55:34 AM »
Jumped out of bed at 4AM when the alarm went off, rather than 'resting my eyes' like yesterday, and made it to the canal at about 4:50AM. Water was crystal clear, even in the dim light, and flowing a little to fast  yet, but fishable on the incoming tide.

The Gods must have decided to smile on me today(or they felt sorry for me going broke on Fin-s fish), because they made the bluefish disappear for a while.

I was breaking in a new outfit, a custom graphite rod a little lighter than the one I've been using, and just like the main one I use, third cast, good solid hit, no head shaking, so I know it's a striper. Don't know what it is about the third cast, but it certainly seems to work for me, LOL. Gave a good fight on the light rod, fish was 24 inches, and used the current to his full advantage. Measured, quick picture taken, and he was back swimming in the canal.

2 more stripers by 6:15AM 24 and 26 inches, and both were measured and quick pic taken, and they too are back in the canal swimming. The 26 incher fooled me, I really thought he was a bigger fish, as he took a lot of line, and was a strong fish, especially in the current.

Tide went slack at 7:15, and so did the fishing, so I had some coffee figuring what a beautiful morning it was not being pestered by bluefish. I started fishing again once the water started moving on the outgoing tide, and the Fin-s I caught the 3 stripers on was chopped up by a bluefish. Put a smaller 4 inch one on, also in the Arkansas Shiner finish, hooked a blue and as I brought him to the wall, he came off. So I walked down to the mouth of the canal by the river, figuring if there were no bluefish there, I'd try for a striper, but the guys were catching blues there pretty steadily, 2 to 4 pound fish, lots of fun on light tackle, but I left and went to the south end of the canal to check it out. Was prolly to late by the time I got there, no stripers hit, but at least no bluefish did either. So all in all, a real good morning far as I am concerned.

Garry

Went back down to the canal late afternoon, about 5PM, water wasn't going to be right till about 6:30, but I figuered I'd see what was going on. Walked down the the mouth of the canal, at the river, cast a plastic shad and a blue hit it, second cast it got destroyed, so I headed up to my spot closer to the 88 bridge. Couldn't make a striper bite happen, landed one bluefish, and lost more Fin-S fish to them, they were around just enough to be annoying.

At dark, walked back down to the mouth of the canal, and saw a guy I know, he said they did good in the morning, he got over 20 of em, and landed 4 late this afternoon. I took one cast and got a blue, another shad destroyed, LOL. Then they started breaking all over the surface. They are running 2 to 4 pounds, and run up & down the river, stopping by the mouth of the canal fairly often.
