Spiral Wrap Pics

Here are a couple of pics of a spiral wrapped rod under load.

My brother Matt had a nice mid 20's striper on when I shot these under load. Seems like this makes more sense than a regular wrap for a conventional setup.

Anyone had a bad experience with this type of wrap?

i have no clue what a wrap is.. but the way that fishing pole looks right there is the best feeling.

The spiral wrap looks cool but how would you figure out the spine of the rod?  I would rather have the spine working for me all the way through the rod. IMHO.

They also call them Acid wrapped and the guys who build them know how to spine them correctly.

It still has to be off spine at some point, which still scares me.

Fortunately, they aren't really for surf guys 

They are becoming fairly popular, especially out west.

Lamiglas is about one of the only rod makers that do spline there rods accurately. Seeker seems to do a nice job as well.

Lami has some nice one piece surf rods, They are splined. Little pricey but very sweat!

My understanding is that spiral wrapped rods reduce the amount of torque on the reel when reeling/fighting a fish.

To date I have never fished one, although I've seen others use them & have never heard a complaint. 

Gottog & Capt. Allen use them on occasion perhaps they'll share their experiences on this topic.

construction-wise, what excactly is a "wrap"?? the only "wrap" i know of (as it applies to rods) is the decorative thread wrapping used on many offshore sticks.  thanx

If you look at the pictures carefully you will notice that the eyes on the rod spiral (or wrap) around the rod instead of going in a straight line.

Every rod has wrap that keep the guides attached.

AS Ped said, this is refers to the way the guides ar "wrapped" around the rod to follow the natural bend/torque of the rod as pressure is applied at the tip of the rod.

Here is another, not as clear, but a good shot of how the rod transitions from a conventional wrap to a spinning rod type setup....spline is set up to load as a spinning rod.

Even a correctly splined conventional or spinning rod will have torque when fighting a fish.

The Spiral Wrap aka Acid wrap aka Roberts wrap is nothing new.  Been around for a long long time and especially popular out west for fighting bigger more powerful fish.

A few rod makers use this technique and one from LINY has a stick wrapped both ways that he uses as a demonstration piece.  Really shows how the spiral wrapped guides use the bend of the rod more effectively and greatly reduces torque at the reel.

A few local builders did test on casting ability of multiple rods and configurations.  A spiral wrapped surf rod had negligible differences in casting distance compared to regular conventionals

My rod builder has made all my conventional sticks this way, from light duty bucktail sticks to my heavy deep water bottom-fishing rods.
I have no problems casting them and fighting fish with them is a blast.  Almost like getting the fun of a spinning rod with the power of a conventional
