Get ready to bend over again

Feds want NJ saltwater fishermen to register, pay fees
by The Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk
Thursday June 12, 2008, 5:50 AM
Saltwater fishermen would need to register with the federal government to go fishing next year, and starting in 2011 pay an annual fee between $15 and $25, according to a report in the Press of Atlantic City.

The report said the proposal from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is designed to assemble a better database of recreational fishermen so they can be interviewed more thoroughly on what they catch and better manage fisheries. The rule would cover federal waters off New Jersey outside three miles and anadromous species of fish in state waters inside three miles.

Yep. They have been talking about this for at least 6 months.

Sucks fo sho.

Only way to avoid is if State already has a permi9t system that they can share with the Feds.

I'm not in favor of any type of saltwater license.  However, there are many who are in favor of one.  And for various reasons they believe it will eventually benefit us (saltwater anglers).

Here's an interesting bit of information I found while doing some googling.  It's  a briefing document put out by NOAA from 2006.  It goes into detail about the advantages and disadvantages of a saltwater registration.  It also notes what groups are for and against this.

At this point it looks like its inevitable. :P

In any case, if you have a second, I would certainly recommend that you take a look at this.

Just a question....Does anyone know what effect (positive or negative) a saltwater license had in Florida?

I realize the politics of New Jersey & Florida are more than likely polar opposites.
