how much is too much wind
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:40:48 AM »
im getting ready to launch a small 16ft aluminum boat with a 9.9hp motor out of atlantic highlands.  i went there for the first time to look around and found that the water is not too rocky.  i will be watching the weather closely but what is the wind speed range i should be looking at.  is 10mph too much to be out there in a small boat, or is 15mph too much?  what do you think...  whats my range?

thanks

it all depends on the direction of the wind and gusts.  10mph winds might bring 20mph gusts.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

With a 9.9 you have to also watch the tide. Some days I could see where you could be at full throttle and not move.
Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

I've fished aluminum boats up in Candada powered with 25 hp motors, with howling winds of 25 to 35 mph and have been scared to you know what. Aluminum boats in that size range can be light above the waterline, and more susceptible to the wind.

On RB, depending on wind and tide, 10-15 MPH should be OK, but beware if it moves over that.  9.9 is not much power to get you home quickly if you venture far from port and conditions change rapidly, which most of us have seen happen on RB.

I have thought about this a lot.  I run a 19" center Console and she does have limitations.    You can never be 100% sure of what the weather will bring.  I've seen guys 5 miles out on the reef in 16' Boats..  But keep this in mind:  If you do go down or over.. are you prepared for it.. just because your boat is sinking or rolled.. doesn't mean your going to die..

Make sure you have the proper safety equipment.  Life vests #1 on and or readily available!!

Make sure you are comfortable with your passages and what you are about to subject them to. ( No I wouldn't take a old man or young child out in a choppy bay)

There is no Real formula for Weather + Wind + Seas = Boat Size..

Just use common sense and make sure you are prepared for anything at any time..

As Hotrod Says....

If your eating something that doesn't taste right.. it's probably bad..

If you in a situation that doesn't seem right..  well that's probably bad also  t^
