Kyaks for us older guys...

Hi All,

As you know I have been looking to buy some sort of kayak but have not found one that will fit my condition.  The hips will not allow me to get into let alone be comfortable in most kayaks.  I was doing some web surfing and came across this small boat company out in Texas that just might have the perfect boat for people that are aging gracefully or need that little extra room and stability to get onto the flats.

Their product looks too good to be true, yes it is a bit more expensive than most Yaks but it has everything a conventional Yak has plus some.  They have stabilizers that will give you the ability to stand and cast on a floating platform plus a choice of electric motors to help you get around.

I have just shot them some queries and when I get back the info I will share it with the site.

Paul that looks great for the back bays in our area, it does look a lot more comfy then a traditional kayak.

Yeah plus it is sturdy, at least it looks sturdy.

I was surprised today when the phone rang and it was one of the owners of the company.  Friendly as anything and really sincere I think he asked me more questions to get a feel for what I needed than I asked.

Each boat is hand made when it is ordered which is very unusual in todays society and I like that.  I will be talking it over with the wife tonight and see if I can swing it with the options I would like to put on it.

Hi OC,

The canoe will give me the same problem and that is with the getting in and out plus the knees have to lower than the hips.  The way this boat is situated with the seat up as high as the gunwales it is easier for me to get my legs up and over while sitting already.

Plus with the added stability collars it makes for a good stand up platform.  The canoe sounds good but I have used a canoe for many years and know their limitations.  These somewhat old bones plus the new hips make me a little too uneasy in a canoe.

Paul, Great find, thanks for posting it.
It looks great, the only problem for me might be its weight. It looks like it needs a trailer and must be launched at a ramp rather than just anyplace. I like to fish the bay but would rather launch wherever I want to.
That being said, What else could I expect if I'm looking for a craft like this? Please let us know if you decide to get it and how it works out.

Hey Mr Limpertt,

The weight might fool you as the boat it self only weighs 47 pounds.  Not counting the stablizers which are very easy to put on.  In a sense it is car topable. I am very serious about this boat and will make up my mind by the weekend.

Every part of the boat is easy to take off as they use cleats and pins to fasten everything.  The stabilizers are attached by a 2 eyes at the bottom which a pin fits into and secured by wing nuts at the top.  Again very simple and fast to set up or take down.

Yeah, I think I spoke too soon. I looked further into it and you're right, the company said the parts (seat stab., etc) are easy to remove and attach. Real interesting, and the price doesn't seem too bad for what you're getting.

Yeah, I figure the boat I am looking at will be around 2 G's give or take.

Anchor system, rod holders, Seat, grab rail, stabilizers, etc.

I will probably have it set up for a trolling motor as I have a Min Kota already.  I hate to have to pay for the registration though. Tired of paying through the nose for everything in this state.

This is true as well.  Not that that is a bad thing but just for fishing in the flats I would like to keep it as simple as possible.

I just might up date my certificate anyway.  Went through it in the late 60's early 70's when my dad and I had the 27' Luhrs.  I think it was the Coast Guard Auxiliary course.  Man that was so long ago.
