Reel Class Weekend Reports (7/4-7/5)
« on: July 06, 2008, 09:42:52 PM »
7/4:  Did a quick trip this morning with my wife, sister in law and brother in law after I convinced them to NOT take the ride to the bay to go crabbing.

Broke out the ultra lights, the gulp baits and the 1/2 oz. jigheads and headed for the stretch between my marina and Clark's at the tide change. Had immediate action with jigging up shorts, 1 keeper. I personally had a blast using a red fiberglass abu rod my parents purchased for me in 1984 for sunny/snapper fishing with 4# mono - those fluke pulled drag and every one was a challenge!

At slack, we headed to fuel up, but went back at it as soon as we had some current to catch the first of the outgoing, had better action with more quality fish and still a few shorts sprinkled in around the deeper water.

Wound up boating around 30 fluke between the 4 of us, 4 of which were keepers to 19.5" in the 2 hours we fished

7/5:  Got out for 3 hours with my brother in law again today, stayed in the river again fishing between Clark's and the 35 bridge with the ultra lights and gulp jigs, and we again had very good action at the change of tide working the edges and the holes. Again landed 30-40 fluke, put 5 in the box up to 21" and about 3#... Had a few others in the 19-20" range and released a bunch of fish that were a hair under 18". It seemed the last hour of incoming, slack water, and first hour of outgoing were best. Once the outgoing started ripping, it shut down to a slow pick.

Good weekend, boat traffic was surprisingly non-existant.  Pics will be on the website in a day or two :)

Also, have some openings this week and next, check the site!

Nice report Capt.

You are right, not too many boats out there this weekend. I guess the weather report caused that.

Sounds like a couple of fun days! t^

What style of Gulp! was most productive for you?

Also, I asked this in one of your other threads but you probably didn't notice it.  What did you mean by a "kil-rig"?

Thanks,
Bob

Way to go Captain Allen. I always hear people say how there's nothing but shorts in the river, and I always chuckle to myself. Light tackle is the key in the river, as you mention.

You might want to also try a bit west, between channel markers 9 and 11, right on the edge of the channel, good mussel beds there and a lot of fluke lay there.

Thanks guys.  Garry I've been fishing the river since for 25 years and know it pretty well - that spot you mentioned is also paved with fluke, as is the back stretch from the hospital W.

Bucktail, it was 3"-4" gulp shrimp.

And, a kil-rig is a rig that features a ball jig without a hook that is rigged on a three-way, behind the three way is a basic 2 hook rig.  The short hook is a hair or fly "teaser" and the trail hook is a plain snelled hook.  Of course you bait the 2 hooks!

You jig the crap out of it, fluke love it!  ;D

OIC.  I just have three more questions.

1. What length of leader do you use from the 3-way to the hooks.
2. What is the length from the ball to the 3-way?
3. What is the purpose for not having a hook on the ball jig?

Thanks Captain. t^

Purpose for the ball jig w/o the hook?  It acts as a flasher/teaser for the trail hooks - plus skates love the ball jigs ;)

Distance from jig to end trial hook, about 24", with hooks going 12" apart

Like this?  (Minus the hook on the ball jig of course.)
