SEA SICK

Hey guys, I havent been on for a month or so. Listen I was in that Mako tournament out of manasquan a couple of weeks ago on my friends 33ft. fishing boat we went out around 25 miles. From the time we got to our fishing hole until we left for home I was majorly sea sick throwing up and could not move or fish at all. I used to own my own boat and never got sick before. I've never been out 25 miles either. Why did I get sick and will dramamine help me next time. I didnt use it on this past trip.

dramamine will help, take one the night before, and one before you leave, but nothing is guaranteed.  Its different when your driving and knowing you can turn around, its another thing when your body knows your stuck out there.

some of it is mental also.  Grandfather told me a story a long time ago, a friend of his was on my grandfathers boat heading in the ocean.  This guys was joking, ball busting, etc.  Everything was fine.  About 45 minutes later when he finally shut his mouth, he looked up and said.. Where is Land... from that point on.. sick as a dog... Seasick is crazy.  There are time you will get sick on a calmer day, and other times you can handle 5 footers.  It all depends on your equilibrium, and also mental.

So I'm going to take bonine. Man I hope it works because there is no worse feeling. especially when your out there for hours. i think if he lets me drive the boat that may help to. Any feedback on that?

personally driving the boat won't help.. When the boat is moving though, it WILL help.  Its when the boat stops that makes people sick.

bonine and dramine, both make me sick. put me right to sleep. luna is right with the mental part, if you think sick you will be. i still take bonine even though it makes me sleepy, but my biggest thing is to stay busy. i have been out days in rough seas, where you could'nt even stand up, took nothing, stayed busy and was fine.then i have had days where it was calm took one of the two,was bored and not busy sick as a dogg.someone just told me that dramine just came out with a nondrowsy form, i will try that and see if i can stay awake,lol.  mind over matter, if its not on your mind it doesnt matter. good luck and always eat sea food the night before, this way if you do get sick atleast you can still contribute for the day, chum it up,lol.

The main difference between Bonine and Dramamine is Bonine can be taken while you are out and just starting to get sick whereas Dramamine you have to take before you get on the boat.

I believe a lot of it is mental but for some I'm not so sure. Had a doctor tell us to try chewing on ginger root, with this in mine we had a freind who has always gotten seasick. The day he went out with my brother in law, he had found Ginger chewing gum, I think in Boaters world and I think all he ate that day on the boat was Ginger Snaps and drank Ginger ale, plus chewing on the Ginger Flavored gum. Now he swears by it. Did the ginger help or did he have it so inplanted in his brain that the ginger would stop the seasickness

Everything I have read about motion sickness, mentions somewhere, about taking ginger in some form or another!  It must work to some degree, although they do say some degree of motion sickness is "mental!"  So, if mentally you think the ginger is helping you, I guess that it does help one way or another!!

MOTION SICKNESS
There are tons of medications available to help motion sickness.  You can even use Benadryl in emergent cases (or lack of dramamine, other drugs, etc...), however, I think it stops the motion sickness by putting you to sleep, LOL!

go to the doctors and tell him you are going on a boat and he will give you a patch that goes behind your ear and it does work TT^the pills stay in you to long

there is no sure fire way to prevent sea sickness.  Just pray for a good day.  Once you get sick, there is no recovering, even if the water calms down a bit.  The only thing that can help would be to start moving the boat.. this will prevent the side to side motion. 

1. take a dranamine the night before you go and one hour before you leave the dock.

2. keep your mind occupied

3. never, ever, ever, go in the cabin.  Stand on the bow and keep looking at the horizon.

4. try to stay away from the smell of gas and chum.

Nothing is guaranteed, but these are a few things that will help.
