Blades or no blades??
« on: May 03, 2007, 12:05:08 PM »
How do you guys like to set up your teasers for Fluke?? I personaly am a keep it simple kind of guy, as a mater of fact up until last year only used a 1 hook fishfinder rig for Fluking.. I have recently started to use a hi lo rig or a fishfinder rig with a dropper/teaser..I never used a spinner/beads..

Which do you guys prefer? do the spinners make that much of a differnce??
I spend 90% of my time fishing, The rest I just waste..

I do the same as catfish.  First I start with a single hook with strip bait, be it squid or fresh junk fish (can't use fluke belly) and spearing.  First junk fish caught on the boat gets cut for strips.
I also use whole squid.  The kind you buy in the Shoprite stores.  I make a double hook rig with the front hook adjustable.  You can also get the Owner boa rig.   Hook the squid between the eyes with the back hook, put the front hook up to the end of the mandle, adjust the hook so the squid rides straight, put it down and hold on

If that does nothing then out come the jewelry.  I try beads, spinners, spin-n-glo.  See what is working for the day. I also use bucktail teasers on a lot of rigs.

Usually others on the boat are trying different things too.  When we find a winner most will go to that.  Of course you always have one or two on the boat who swear by their rig/technic, and spend most of the day fishing instead of catching.

But just keep changing up until you hit the magic offering.

On the slow drift days the spro jigs or chrome balls come out.  Put a strip bait on the end, jig it up and down to jump it off the bottom.  (I also use a teaser hook on a dropper loop above the jig at times.)  Work the jig to make it "puff" the silt off the bottom.  That seems to get their attention.

Man, I can't wait for the fluke season to start!   t^ t^

No, you can not use fluke belly in NJ.  Even if you save the carcass.  They were working on passing a bill for it to be legal to do this, but they have not done so yet.

You can not have in possession any part of a fish that has a size limit.  If there is a size limit you can not fillet that fish at sea.  The exception to this is a party boat can fillet if they have the proper permit to do so.

I am trying to find the regs on the NJ site.  When I find it, I will post it.

here is the NJ division of fish and wildlife site.  http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/saltwater.htm

the link below is the one that applies to filleting.  The second link came from the NJ division of fish and wildlife site.

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2006/digmar06.pdf

Check page 14 under finfish, filleting.

Hopefully, they will pass something to allow us to use fluke belly.  I don't think you can find a better bait than that.

The Conservation Officers were checking for fluke strips last year up north.  techically, they can count every strip as a short/illegal fish.

No blades ... the flash is an invitation for blues to destroy your rig.

I, for one, am willing to sacrifice a rig or two to blue fish.  I do make my own rigs so they aren't that costly to loose a few.
The blue fish do give a good fight with the lighter tackle and if you can get them boated they make really good fresh bait.   TT^
