Oswego disaster weekend!!!
« on: August 03, 2008, 09:39:47 AM »
Where to begin? ....had high hopes since I head up every year on the same weekend. Salmon bite has been up and down but a few 25+ lb fish were pulled this week.
Left Friday afternoon anticipating our normal 5 hour drive time - WRONG! Rt. 81 north was single lane construction most of the way and we crawled all the way.
Woke up Saturday to T-storms and lightning to our south, but doppler showed nothing over the lake and wind was calm so we shoved off at 6 AM.
Lines in 6:30 in 200 ft. Ran mostly salmon flies with one rod pulling a spoon. Downriggers, copper line, planers and dipseys at different depths. Worked 200 - 400 for a few hours w/o a knockdown. Moved deeper into 500 + ft and still couldnt get a scratch. Screen was blank most of the day and the radio chatter was dismal as well.
Then the fun began. We could see the storms to the south, but doppler still showed nothing on the lake. Cells started to form around us out of nowhere! Got real hairy with wind, lighting, and for the first time I've witnessed waterspouts. Crazy stuff tearing up the water around us.
Lines in by 12:30 PM and headed to the barn. 1 keeper laker to show for 6 hours trolling!
Get back to our hotel to find out a transformer was struck by lightning and power would be out for the at least the rest of the day. They offered us a full refund for Sat nights stay. We were scheduled to fish this morning for 3 hours but we decided to bag it and head home on Sat night.
Just a crappy weekend all around. To top it off I feel like crap and woke up last night with a 102 fever. When it rains it pours!!!!!!!

Weekend notes: if your going to wear Crocs, have thick enough skin to take the ballbusting.
: beer is not food.
: gas @ 4.12 a gallon sucks
: upstate New Yorkers are a strange bunch.

Sorry you had such a bad outing.  I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you had nice weather and a good trip...just not any great catches, but when all the evil/negative lines up in a row and kicks you in the butt...it certainly is NO fun!!  Especially after traveling for it.

I don't know how you guys afford the gas... ???

I used to go up there all the time for the fall run. Used to take my little 12 foot alum john boat with trolling motor and fish the mouth of the Salmon River right where it started to narrow. Was nice becasue I didn't have to fight for a spot on shore an when I hooked into a King, he'd tow me around for a bit. :)

Visiting the fish hatchery during the run was always a highlight.

duffman, i know exactly what your saying.. ive had that happen to me about 6 years back when i went for browns in oswego... storms, lot of rain, and waterspouts!

1. agree'd, upstate new yorkers are strange!
2. route 81 construction is still going on ?!?!??  5hrug what is taking so long, i remember this from last year and maybe the year before.. all the way through scranton and then some, what a pain in the a$$

if i were you, id wait for october and november, and go wade salmon river for some serious action.. like fighting a freshwater bluefish in 12 inches of fast moving water!. hell of a lot of fun.. i should be up there 4 or 5 times this coming season... only a 4 hour trip

better luck next time..
and yes beer is food chrz

Nick,
I don't know when you used to go up, but the lower river to the first bridg is not as bad as it was in the 80's
