Great Bay Flounder
« on: August 05, 2008, 07:29:28 AM »
Although I'm posting this today, I hope this holds some value for some fellow wetters.

This past sunday my brother-in-law and I were drifting in Great Bay after setting in at Rand's and trying for flounder. I was skunked all morning but he was pulling in about 15 to 17 inch flounder every 10 to 20 mins! We were using basically the same set up squid and minnow on a single snell hook)  but I was fishing the bottom with a fish finder, he wasn't. So we moved out to the channel and I noticed that along with the jellies that were floating by there was something else in the water. It appeared to be a mass of baby squid darting here and there but upon further inspection they seemed to be immature bloodworms. It didn't dawn on me that this would be almost any fishes free meal until I pulled up a small flounder and she spat one out. Well, duh! So out came the next best thing - a Gulp bait substitute for bloodworm. Damn if within the next 15 minutes I didn't pull up two small flounder and 1 kingfish!! All on the same bait no less.

What am I getting at? Sometimes the bait that'll do the trick is right off your bow ... or stern, wherever you may be in the boat.

Fish On!!!

Good report and keep them coming.

Welcome Aboard and nice to see you posting right off the reel.  I am always preaching Match the Hatch as it will always be better to find out what the locals are eating and try and mimic that bait.

Good job and thanks again for the post.

Happy Catching

Paul

Nice report, and welcome to the site. Nice catch, way to observe and 'match the hatch', so to speak.

Those little worms are called cinder worms. They looked like 1 - 1.5" pieces of brown yarn, right? They tend to come out on or around the new moon - whether they are hatching or spawning I'm not sure. Depending on the location and time of day, they can put you on fish, as just about anything with fins will eat them. Good job! And welcome to the site!

A little more about these cinder worms. I have only paddled into the middle of a hatch (it's actually a spawn) once, and didn't see any surface fish action, and didn't get any action on my line either. After doing a little research, it seems that when fish are feeding on these worms they become very selective, to the point that experienced fishermen will just pack up and leave if they can't "match the hatch". This is an example where the fly boys have a big advantage over everyone else. So JR, that was a good call. One other bait comes to mind, though. Gulp makes an earthworm bait, bout 3" long - chop one of those in half and you got a perfect imitation.
