We were planning trip out to Toms Canyon Monday night...could get the crew together. Since being a newbee to canyon and tuna fishing, looking for some insight. What are optimal conditions? Temp breaks and water clarity breaks. Consult a SST services Roffs is a good one to use. What's best wind direction? I would not be too concerned with the direction of the wind for conditions.Water temp? Again difference of water temps of 3 or more degrees.Water color? Usually were green and cobalt blue water meet.Since we'll be arriving at night, best bait to use for chunking? Trolling...ballyhoo, or artificial? At night chunk with butter fish. You will need at least 6 flats for chunk, 1 for whole bait, flat of anchovies, about 5 lbs. of whole squid. Trolling spreader bars a must, mix in some skirted ballyhoo, with some naked, and green machines are very productive at day ligh. We'll be heading out from Barnagat, on a 28ft.If you plan to anchor you will need about 1400' of line.
