08/06 Reel Class Report
« on: August 06, 2008, 07:51:08 PM »
Fished aboard Capt. Allen's Reel Class today with 2 others for a fluke til you puke trip. Made a left of the inlet and proceded to head north.

Just short of Belmar we came across some working birds and noticed some significant splashes underneath them. Quickly tying on some jigs and plugs we started casting. I had a fast pickup on my first cast as the jig fell but I failed to hook up. We then saw bonito porpoising and chasing bait. The fish were moving north & we followed. We eventually hooked up with 3 fish (2 on plugs and the other on a jig) but all 3 broke off but not before we got 1 boatside and saw it was a big bluefish. We also noticed several big pods of porpoises corralling bait & bluefish. This activity some broke up & we continued north to the fluke grounds.

Made a short attempt on the mussels beds off of Asbury before continuing up to Elberon. Wind kept changing directions from due south to WSW then to the west but once you got offshore it seemed to be NW.

We picked away with 3 of us bucktailing and the other dragging bait. We slowly put a catch together culling 15 keepers up to #6 out the approximate 150 fluke we caught. At times it was drop and reel fishing. In addition we added 3 nice sea bass to the catch. Best action was in the 30-40'. Glow Spro with a strip seemed to out preform other colors. A 3" GULP shrimp as a teaser also accounted for a good amount of fish. Personally I was kinda surprised to see the shrimp catch fluke in the ocean as I didn't think it would do as well as it does in the bay/river.

Thanks again Capt. Allen for a well needed day on the water.  t^

awesome report,  t^
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Nice catch. The keepers are there, you do have to work for them though.  t^
