Reel Class Fluke 8/11
« on: August 11, 2008, 07:13:02 PM »
Had Greg Vongas, Capt Ed Mackin, Ryan Helmstetter and his buddy Pete along today for the FTYP trip. It was all bucktails, all the time today.

Ran north again, started up around Asbury and had shorts and shorts and more shorts in 45'. Continued north, fished a very sticky spot about 3 miles off Long Branch and had a few fish right away, with some nice keepers going in the box. First few drifts it was a current only drift, then it crapped out pretty quick. Conditions were absolutely terrible thereafter as we had zero drift, little puffs of wind from every direction, and no current. Lines were going all over the place. For awhile, the only fish we saw was a giant sunfish which came up under us a couple of times!

Got a call from my dad to head for the hills shortly thereafter b/c of a severe t-storm warning for where we were, but we waited it out, as the line came right up the beach - lightning, thunder, torrential downpours but no wind.

The guys fished through it, caught some shorts, until we found a break. Found some fish in close, another keeper, but that was it. For about an hour we didn't have a legit fluke bite. Conditions continued to be absolute crap, until we had a little NNW breeze kick in around 1PM.

Went back to a lump off the beach, and it was game on. First drift was real good, had several nice keepers come up, including Greg's 29"/9# pig - nice fish man!!!  Some of the other fish were in the 3-4# range, again all on bucktails & teasers. Repeated that drift 3 more times, only pulled a couple more fish, but that was all we needed. By 2:30 or so, the N wind started CRANKING so we started for home.

Finished the day with about 30 fluke, 11 of which were boxers up to that nice 9# fish Greg took, and Ryan also nailed a couple in the 3-4# range. Also had 1 keeper seabass.

Big thanks to Greg for bringing his gulp smorgasbord from his own gulp deli, and thanks to Eddie for his stand up act which had us all in stitches, all day long  Great trip guys

Art, Eddie was camera shy.  When we took the pics of the fish at the dock he ran to his truck, then to the john.  He said go ahead without him.

My sides still hurt from the pure comedy from the big man  chrz
