How much fuel do you burn?
« on: August 12, 2008, 11:21:07 AM »
Just had a guy in my shop that’s telling me he burns 52 gallons an hour. Didn’t find out what kind of boat he has, but I do know he fishes off shore.
Seems like allot to me.
How big is your boat and how much fuel do you burn?
Just wondering is this guy is BS’ing me
Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

roughly i would say i burn 10gph, or less

to hit 52 you would need a nice sized ride with duels or better, but i would not doubt it. im sure there are rides out there that exceed that and then some.

Sounds like he probably has twin outboards and runs them all out. Wouldn't surprise me that he would burn the GPH he said.

When I opened up my 2 stroke Yammie about (5500 RPM), I was burning about 28+ GPH. At cruising speed (4500 RPMs) I was burning 16 GPH.

With my 4 stroke Yammie, I burn 13 GPH at 4500 RPM and go just a bit faster then the 2 stroke was giving me at the same RPM.

All this is calculated on my Yamaha fuel management system (similar to flow scan).

Last couple weeks my '92 GW 24 Explorer w/Yammy 225 2str burned 52 gals on 4 trips from Keyport to the Hook and back- incl moving around a bit fishing (estimate 60-75mi)- I got no floscan but estimate 10-14 GPH. I try to keep it under 4500r's so it doesn't xplod.

Grillo's '07 GW 28 Sailfish w/twin Yammy 225 4str burns 25GPH total @ 4300r's @30kt according to floscan & GPS- pretty good I think. It's also new & clean w/no btm paint.

I also was checking out a banned 'Rude 200hp 2str on a 22' Cboss burning an indicated 12-14GPH @ approx 20kt @3500 r's they shall remain nameless

I have yet to install a Floscan, but my best calculations put my burn rate at 9-11 GPH (diesel) @ 3200RPM (27-30mph) cruise with my normal fishing load. At the start of the season, we trolled for bass 8-12 hrs a day with an avg. of 20 or so miles a day "running" ,for 6 1/2 days before topping off the tank. We had used 66 gallons, so I'm happy with the economy of the single diesel. When researching boats last year, I looked at a few comparable size/weight (10K lbs.) boats with twin OB,s (usually 200-250s)that spec'd 20-30GPH, so I have no doubt that a bigger boat, with more power and pushed hard could burn over 50gph.

On my Wellcraft 360 I have twin diesels; Cummins 540. My most recent canyon trip I fueled up at fishermans supply at the mouth of the inlet. Ran to the Toms, picked up and ran another 15 miles and trolled for 5 hours before running home. Refilled at the dock and took 284 gallons. I figured 95 miles each way trolled 5 hours at 7 knots; picked up and ran an additional 15 miles total was approximately 240 miles plus 24 hours of running the generator.

On the way out the weather was perfect and so I ran at 2500-2550 RPM's for an hour. I was burning 24-26 GPH per engine and making 31-32 knots. When I backed down to my normal sweet spot of 2200-2250 I was burning a more reasonable 32-36 gph and making 27.5 knots. I was told to run approximately 1 hour at 2,500- 2,600 (WOT) to 8 hours of 2300 and less for optimum performance.
(at 7 knots i was burning 3gph)

Hey... I know that sounds like a bunch to me too.  I have a 35 Viking with twin 310's and I burn about 36-40 GPH at about 3400-3600 RPM... Wish I had diesels.  I know I would pick up a few knots... I am lucky to hit 20 kts...

ooof... the new diesels get decent fuel burn and speed. I have the inline and electronic controls ... i feel your pain... the new diesels would definately get you more than a few knots

I had Navman on my Aquasport. Very accurate. The one I had, 2100(I think) didn't have a NMEA connection so it didn't show MPG.  On the Contender, I have the Lowrance LMF200. I forgot how much it was, but it is very accurate and hooks up with a GPS to show MPG and a host other things...

I got a 20' Maritime Skiff Pioneer Pilothouse with a Honda 90 carb motor. We ran this boat from Mystic Island to the Atlantic City Reef and back for a total of around 50-55 miles. Boat holds 29 gals. Fuel gauge was between a
quarter and a half when we hit the dock. I'll estimate we used 18 gal, divide that by 55 miles and it comes out to over 3 miles per gal.
Pretty good I'd say. Capt.Matt
