Foul Hooking??

I was just looking through some other surrounding states fishing regulations.  I came across some very interesting information that I never knew.  In many other states, any fish that is foul hooked has to be released regardless of size!  So, then I thought maybe I had missed something in NJ Regs as well, but there is no foul hook rules.  I mostly do CPR fishing, with a few exceptions, so almost anything I catch is released anyway.

I know that for records and some tournaments keeping foul hooked fish is not allowed, but how about everyday fishing??  Do you release any foul hooked fish or do you keep them if they are big enough??  I guess this is more of an ethical question in NJ, unless I am wrong.  If I am someone please correct me.  Just curious to see what others think and do.  I have my own opinion, so...

As far as my C&R I usually release all anyway.

Interesting..why are foul hooked fish released? Wouldn't their mortality rate go up?

If you read NY State Regulations for certain freshwater fishing, any foul hooked fish has to be released even if it is regulation size.  I agree, very odd, but it is a regulation.  That is why I posed the question to the list, b/c it was very surprising for me!!

If one of my hooks is in a keeper sized fish, even foul-hooked, it gets released into my cooler.  Regulations permitting of course

The NY regulation is probably because of the salmon fishery in the lake Ontario tribs.

They take great pains to stop people from snagging Chinook Salmon.

That is definitely one of the reasons, but the regulations apply for every species out there in a handful of waters.  I thought it was kind of odd that they didn't write the Regs better and write up a definition of snagging and no snagging rules.  I mean, we all know that the people writing the Regs are not the best!Instead, if you are out fishing with bait or lures properly and happen to foul hook the fish, you have to throw it back!

I was just curious to see what people did around here with foul hooked keepers.  The way I look at it is, if I can put my hands on it, I would keep it!!

I release a lot but if I caught a legal fish that I was planning on keeping anyway...it'd go in the cooler...

As far a damaging a fish, I would think that the mortality rate of a snagged fish would be much less than a gut hooked one. Cuts and wounds can heal, I've seen fish with nasty scars.
