Reel Class Fluke 8/20
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:48:50 PM »
Had Tom Breeland, George "Dubya" Push, and Bryan Turci aboard today for a fluke trip.

Hard NE winds greeted us at 6:30, with 3-4' seas pushing nicely together making for a quick, steady, chop. After talking it over w/ the crew, we decided it was a good move to stick in the river for awhile to see if things settled down.

Incoming tide, NE winds = good drift for the back. Started out in the old channel, nothing. Moved to the main channel, working the edges from the 35 bridge straight back to Osborne Island, we got the pick going. In spurts, in patches we caught, fluke from 8"-21" throughout the rest of the tide. We even had a 5# + fluke follow a short up to the surface, either taking a shot at the short or at the jig! Real cool sight!!!

Once the tide changed, like a switch, it was over. We got 6+ good hours out of the tide though, fishing it from start to finish. On the outgoing, we just picked some more short fish.

Overall we boated something like 60 fluke, if not more, with 8 nice ones going in the box all in the 19-21" range. Either they were no doubter keepers, or obvious throwbacks. Bryan was hot hand, boating at least 30 fish himself. Bait of choice was gulp penny shrimp, or fresh mullet which was cast netted last evening. Good light tackle trip, lots of action, and a few for the table

Nice report. It's good to have Plan B when Plan A can not be done. Good job.  t^

Sounds like a good day even tho the bite shut off.
