reel maintenance
« on: August 20, 2008, 10:10:10 PM »
landing the big one is alot easier if your equipment is well takin care of,especially fishing in the sand.Try to keep your reel out of the sand as much as possible. After every use of my equipment on the beach I spray my reels down with a garden hose, whipe them dry and spray them down with wd40. Spray the entire reel line and all, then just whipe the excess off with a dry rag. After three times of my reels being on the beach i do the above mentioned but then i take the spool off and use an air duster can to blow out all the sand, and then reoil. saltwater and sand are very harsh on reels, so if you take the time, and care for them you will get more out of your fishing trips.  happy catching. grtn

Good post Ken but be careful with the garden hose as the power of the spray could in fact drive sand and salt deeper into everything.  I usually use warm water from the tap in a gentle spray wipe down and then spray with WD40 and wipe off again.

That's a great point Paul.  It's important not to  use the water in such a way that it gets inside the reel.  Even freshwater sitting inside your gear case will rust out your reels. :-\  Instead it's best to use a light spray to dissolve the salt off of the outside.

Also, don't soak them in a bucket of water either.  I know that sounds like common sense.  But I've seen a few reels messed up really bad by guys doing that.

Oh, and it's OK to wipe it down with WD40 if that's your thing.  But it's not a good idea to spray it inside the reel or on your bearings.  It can actually lift the grease and oil away from the metal that they are there to protect.  ;D

good point about inside the reel. wd40 is not good for in there just the outside body and spool. if you do venture insideget the proper grease. i use dielectric grease or white lithium grease inside, only when i open them up.

I use the Penn Kit for a good Lube job when I take everything apart. Daily I just like to throw the entire pole in the shower and give the whole thing a quick wash.  Don't forget to use conditioner after the shampoo, that salt air really makes things knotty.   hhppy rofla
