ISLAND HEIGHTS — Thousands of dollars worth of items were stolen from unlocked cars and boats in Island Heights between Sunday night and Monday morning, according to Patrolman Matt Curtis.

Curtis urged Island Heights residents to lock their vehicles, and remove personal
belongings from them. "We like our residents to feel nice and safe, but you have to lock your cars up,'' he said.

Police are investigating the thefts of items ranging from stereos, navigation systems and wallets to fishing polls, radar units and sunglasses, Curtis said.

In all, 16 motor vehicles and a few boats were hit, Curtis said. The motor vehicles were parked throughout the borough, he said. Many of them were parked on Lake Avenue and Maple Avenue, he said.

The boats were docked at Dillon's Creek Marina, on Lake Avenue, Curtis said. Surveillance video from the marina indicates the boats were hit around 2:15 a.m. Monday, Curtis said.

Curtis urged anyone with information on the thefts to call the Ocean County Sheriff's
Department, which dispatches for the Island Heights Police Department, at (732) 270-3000.

Hate to say it, but motor vehicles should be locked at all times when unattended anyways. That is, if you value your stuff at all.  ::)

I read somewhere that some crazy number like 50% of all stolen vehicles were unlocked with the keys in them. Well, duh, that only works in bizarro world, not in NJ in 2008. Sad but true.

When I was on the job I investigated many cases involving kids walking around at night just checking car doors. If they open, they have a field day inside the car grabbing anything they can. These items are usually traded for their drug of choice.

Most times the theft goes unsolved because it is done at night with no one around to witness.

KEEP THE DOORS LOCKED AND VALUABLES OUT OF SIGHT. BETTER YET, TAKE THEM OUT OF THE CAR AND INTO THE HOUSE.

Man that is hard as my whole veh is my tackle box... :P

I do park it right under my flood light that has an infrared sensor.  The drive way is long and wide and I have it set to go off if some one hits the beginning of the driveway.

Still it makes you feel unsecured.

Put a couple signs out at the end of your property by the driveway...

1 should read "These Premises Protected by a BIG A$$ German Shepherd" and the 2nd one should read, "Owner Has SHOTGUN and is Not Afraid to Use!"
