Help me spend some money
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:05:13 PM »
So this fall will be my first try at stripers and blues .
I'd like to get a few lures / rigs to get started.
Not looking to spend much, just a few middle of the road lures and rigs for the surf from IBSP.
I've read Paul's write-up on artificial lures as well as other threads here, but don't have the experience to pick.  I do have one Krocodile spoon and a fishfinder setup with a circle hook.
I was thinking rigs for bait, metals and lures.  Maybe 2 or 3 of each.
For now I'm working with cheapo spinning combos, one 9ft and one 7ft.  So far i've been able to throw up to 4oz. with bunker chunk with the 9ft.   Replacing them will be next years jump.
Suggestions and recommendations appreciated.
Thanks guys.

I like the Gibbs Lures.  My favorite is the casting swimmer.  Great surface lure.  Kind of a mix between a swimming plug and a popper.  Good for both blues and stripers(years ago, hooked up with both on this type of lure).  I also like Rapala Xrap Minnows/Bombers, Fin S Lures and Sluggo Lures(sluggos look like eels).  Deadly Diks are great also.

Man I could go on all day...you can never have enough lures!!

Hope this helps?

Bombers, black at night, school bus during the day. Always worked for me. Use a teaser, white, yellow, black or red, in front of the lure.

whs  Bombers are deadly and easy to fish.  I would also add these other basic lures to that list.

1.  1/2 oz. to 2 oz. white bucktails with 6" white plastic curly tails.

2.  5" or 6" Tsunami or Storm Swim Shads in Bunker, Pearl White and Chartreuse.

3.  2 to 3 oz. popping plugs.  Atom Striper Swipers and Creek Chub Striper Strikes are the old stand by.  Floating poppers such as the Gibbs Pencil Popper, Gags Grabbers Floating Rattling Popper, or the Tsunami TS Popper are worth checking out as well.

Hi Chris,

Just starting out as far as filling your surf bag can get very expensive.  The first advice is to pick a lure you are comfortable in casting weight wise.  If your pole is rated for say 2 to 8 oz lure eight I would try in the area of a 3 to 4 oz lure to start with.  Each pole will have its own sweet spot as far as castability of lures.

Once you find that you have then narrowed it down pretty well.

I would be remiss if I did not start off with my all time favorite lure and I always have them available it the Blue/Silver is the Striper Swiper by Atom lures.  I carry one in 2oz and one in 3 oz.  I think I have caught more fish on this one lure than all the rest combined in my bag.

It is a top water plug made for popping and it does the job very well.

There are others but this is the tried and true.

Creek Chub makes some great lures as well with many as swimmers (with a lip of some sort) The Striper Strike is a great lure.

Then there are the Stan Gibbs lures, just starting off I would pick up two types off the bat the Polaris Popper and the Pencil Popper in colors of black, white, red/white, yellow/red.

As far as metals go you said you have a Krocodile already, that's good.  Pick up a number of AVA in sizes from 007 to 47.  I would use green, chartreuse, red, and/or white tubing.  If you are limited choose chartreuse first or green they seem the most productive.

And the next lure would be the Hopkins with a bucktail usually in white with red wipping.

If you can build up to these lures in your bag you should have no problem matching the hatch and catch fish this fall.

But it does take practice as some of these lures swim very differently at different speeds so don't be afraid to experiment.

Good Luck

BTW, a lot of these lures can be purchased at your mega mart stores at reasonable prices, shop around.

Happy Catching

Paul

Wow thanks guys.
I'm going shoppin....just don't tell my wife.   :-X
I think I'm gonna start off with an XRap, a Bomber Long A, Striper Swiper and Striper Strike.  That should get me started.
Oh yeah....and a new tackle bag to store then all in  ;)
And as of 7am I'm on vacation for 2 weeks with nothing to do but practice.

Thanks

Side note for Paul - Your attached Word Doc. under "Jigs Rigs & Lures (Pictures and how we like to use them)" isn't working, maybe from the move to the new server.  Lucky for me a saved it to disk way back when I first read it.

stripers come in close after a storm like this weekend, getting all the bait fish and clams that get thrown on the shore.. Sunday may be a good day for the beach.
