live lining for stripers
« on: September 09, 2008, 03:47:18 PM »
I fish for and catch stripers all year long, and i never keep bass. I always catch and release especially resident bass, got to keep our sport going and every little bit counts. t^...went out last Thursday and caught 2 30#ers a bunch of schoolies and some big blues. A little trick i use around this time of year for resident bass is live lining spot. The key is to find working birds and stay about 100 yards away from the feeding frenzy. The Bass are there but way outside or under the bluefish so i put between 5 and 12 little splitshots in the gill slot of the baitfish. the split shots weigh down his head so as soon as he hits the water he runs down and into the lower water column where the striper strike zone is right now. little trick my grandfather taught me years ago and its pretty effective  chrz

it works ...just know that the split shots are in the gill slot long enough to get him down but he spits them after a few minutes so if he come back up or if you want to check him and let him back out, you have to put more splits to get him down again

Why not use a fishfinder rig with a sinker like you do in spring?
Thank you.

If you use a sinker they wont swim down into the strike zone they will be pulled down and it doesnt look natural...also if you bring him down to the bottom u will have to fight off all the junk fish (dog fish) using my method will not bring him down to the bottom it will just make him swim in a lower water column TT^

Dead money...don't keep your mouth shut!  That's not what this place is about!!  I gladly welcome your tips and tricks.  I give everything a shot.  There is no one way to fish.  Which is evident by people landing world record fish on Barbie Fishing Poles.  I am sure there are 100 other ways to liveline bait fish for stripers...obviously your way works as you catch fish that way.  Thank you for sharing your method.  I am sure the way Sleeper fishes works too.

As others have said, many different ways to catch the same critter.

I can see where DM's way will have a certain benefit in that it puts the bait in different water columns with little interference from a heavy weight to keep it down.

Keep the tips coming. Not all will agree, but all will appreciate the input.

keep the tips coming.  Remember also, it is our choice to use the tip or not to use the tip.  We can question the tip in hopes to tweak it and make it better, but by no means are the questions challenging what has worked for you in the past.
