9-17 Trolling
« on: September 17, 2008, 11:14:29 PM »
Left Manasquan at 3:30pm (got a very late start), and headed for the Klondike hoping to troll some blues. Got none, headed west to Shark River and trolled south along the coast back up to Manasquan, therefore making a large circle. I trolled 2 poles: first with wire line, a 6oz drail, and a bunker spoon (hoping for a striper), and my second pole with fluro line, a 6 oz. drail, and a bomber lure. No hits, but it was beautiful out there. Came in at around 6:00pm. Saw no birds anywhere during this time. Was too late to head to the SB Rocks, so tried local. I have a few questions for you guys: what troll speed do you like in either knots or mph? Did I do anything wrong with my methods? One thing is for sure, my rods are OK- custom built by Bogans for each use. Thanks, guys, I appreciate it!

When I troll bunker spoons I use wire line, 3' leader and stay arounf 2 MPH.

The spoons run 1.5ft and 2.0ft for every 10 feet of wire.

I run them on 11' foot rods with line counter reels.
Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all of my fishing tackle for what she thinks I paid for it!

Best thing to do is put the spoons in the water alongside the boat. Run the boat till you get the proper action from the spoons. Maintain that speed and let the spoons out to where you want them. The action of the spoon is more important than the actual speed of the boat.  t^

If you have bunker spoon rods you will see the rod pulsating from the action of the spoon. If it stops pulsating, pull your line in as you probably have fouled the spoon with grass or plastic.

Good luck.

Blues can be spotty in this staging leg of the run... you probably had too much weight on your spoon.  Also, Mann's deep diving plugs (about 15 bucks, find them anywhere) are better than ur bomber unless it was a deep diver
