I met up with Captain Joe and Bob G. this morning to try to do some offshore trolling/jigging for some tuna, mahi, etc. Heading out of the inlet we were immediately greeted by large swells which turned into a pretty nasty chop as we got further out. Captain Joe made the call to cancel our plans for offshore and turned the boat back around. The new plan was to do some trolling and (hopefully) jigging for some bluefish near the Shrewsbury Rocks..
The call turned out to be the right one as we found plenty of bluefish up to 12 lbs. or so willing to bite on our trolled Rapala and Mann's Stretch 25 plugs. We also had a cedar plug and bunker spoon out at different times during the day, but didn't get a hit on either. The bonus of the day was a single striper, which was just a bit too small to keep.
Although most of the action was on the troll, we did manage to jig up a few as well!
It was definitely rough out there. And although the weather conditions put a damper on our offshore dreams today, we still managed to have a really fun day cranking in some of those yellow eyed demons!
