Hi all!
« on: September 20, 2008, 12:45:41 PM »
I'm new to the board (and surf fishing - though I've fished fresh water all of my 25 years) and was really enjoying the layout and info here.

I was hoping that I could beg some information off some of the experienced guys here.  Specifically, I've been enjoying fishing at IBSP every weekend for the last few weeks, but have met with no success.  I have been parking at A18 and fishing there.  I've noticed that there aren't many fish being caught there (though there was a big ray or skate dragged in there last weekend.)  I've done some digging and read that places like "Gillikins" (sp?) or A7 are good spots.  Is there a map of the park that lists these locations that some of you may know about?

Now I'm not asking you guys to give up your hotspots or anything, but I would really appreciate if you could at least point me in the direction of a good access area to base my studies out of!

Thanks for anything you guys could throw me.  I remember how long it took me to get to be a "good" freshwater fisherman and am actually excited about this new venue for new techniques!

Welcome!  PED579 will chime in.  He is the IBSP Guru.  A lot of people have decent success at A10.  I have not been able to find a map of the park either.  So hopefully if someone has one that has the areas marked it would help me out as well.  I know a lot of the guys fishing out there go down on the stretch where you need a beach buggy to get out to.  Really, any parts along the park there are good.  If you read the article about "Reading the Sand" and are able to identify some of those structures along the beach, it will help you pick areas to fish.  The structure is ever changing out there, especially after a storm or like yesterday and todays east winds.

No one here has a problem "spot burning!"  We don't consider it spot burning here.  We consider it economical fishing.  Anyone here will tell you where might be good to fish or where fishing is good at the specific time.  It is a great group of people here that will help you out any way they can.  There is lots of knowledge, expertise, experience and laughs here!

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you may have.  I know you will get lots of information back and you will learn a lot about surf fishing and fishing in general.

Welcome Aboard MisterStickabee,

Nice to have you in on our band of surf rats...I fish IBSP a lot and would recommend you try between A10 and A17 as there are a number of good holes there even after a blow like we just had.

Right now I would recommend clams because the beds I am sure took a good hit and the stripers especially are probably gorging themselves right now.

That map is a good copy but it does not show all the parking areas.  You should find after the bathing beaches each area is numbered from A1 all the way to the end of the road which is A23.  From there it is about a mile and a half to two miles to the inlet.

Gillikins is great but it is a bit of a walk it get to the beach, you might try 'Too Bit Road' right there after the guard shack as you drive in.  Follow the dirt road around and there will be additional parking by the porta jon.  From there it is a short walk to the beach and some good fishing as well.

If there is anything else just ask and if I don't know the answers I will be able to find them out for you.

Happy Catching

Paul

Here is a really good map not in color but it has all the parking areas marked I believe.

Amazing how promptly everyone got on here and said "Hi" and I am thrilled with how quickly people were willing to dispense valuable information.  I'm heading down there tomorrow morning to spend the day trying to nab my first fish (of whatever kind) from the surf.  If I'm lucky enough to get something, I'll make sure to post pics and let you guys know.  I'm excited to be so warmly welcomed into the community.  Thanks again!

Just a reminder to be careful as the beach has changed by the heavy surf on Friday into Saturday.  If history holds true A10 still should be a good place to start.

You might want to pick up some clams and mullet as well.

Good Luck.
