NJ Kayak Fishing - Tips and Trips
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:03:46 PM »
Just looking for some feed back from those out there interested in kayaking the bay and ocean... But may not be sure just how to get started or just looking for more knowledge.

I have put a lot of time into kayak fishing the local waters from the early spring into the late fall and even the winter.

I would be more then happy to share some of my fishing tips with you... which has worked for me.... I also try to fish as much as possible,  so each trip out... I will let you know what is running and what is working to put fish in your kayak.

I'm not an expert in kayak fishing, and I'm sure some may not agree with everything... But If I could help save you just a little time and money, I sure don't mind.

So,weekly I will update Kayak Tips and Trips for you, Please let me know what you think.

Thank's
Dave

I think it is a great idea!  I don't kayak, but I always like to learn new things that will help in some way or another.

That sounds great Dave.  Maybe you can even do some research for us older guys you know the ones that can't bend or flex as good as we used to.

I have been looking at a kayak as you know but the price is a problem right now as it is over 2,000 bucks for the equipment like a higher seat stabilizers and easy to get ready for an outing.

Here is the link to start you off.  At first looks it is more like a canoe but rides like a kayak.

Good luck with your articles.

Well it sure seems like this will work out for all of us.. buy the responce in such a short time.

I just wanted to take time and point out to anyone that may be interested in kayak fishing for the first time...

Please read the following two posts,

Kayak Fishing 101   http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=7619.0
and
Before The Fishing Begins. http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=7736.0

The information found in these posts are so important to you... as a kayaker or someone just starting off in the sport... Its not just going out getting a kayak and fishing.

Some back ground Information for you... I'm sure not the average kayak fisherman,I started this sport back in the early 90's when kayaks just started to show up along the beach....

I had this great idea of chasing bunker schools for big bass along the beach in June and July...
I sure had some fun doing just that. Soon after I wanted more from this sport, so I started doing more with my kayak, but still had some problems.

I had a great looking kayak which was a sit on top, I picked it up at some sport shop on sale and boy was it cool looking... the life vest that was even better, tons of pockets for all my stuff. The man at the store said this was the best for me and sure you will catch fish using it.

Well here comes the problem, I spent more time in the water with my cool looking life vest that couldn't hold me up like I was told it would.

I'm over 6 feet tall and 230 pounds in a kayak...
It took me a long time to find the information that these two posts have in them..... please take the time and find a kayak that is right for you and the water you are going to fish in.... The life vest is not to store your stuff... but to save your life.

I just wanted to recognize both DAK and SEAFLEA on your posts.... great job.

I will have my first update for all of you next week..... I was also asked by a local tackle shop to try some new lures that they had just got in.... So I will also pass this info on to you... as to how they work.

1st let me say that the importance of the PFD cannot be overstated! Just as Dave has said; it has got to be able to support you if you dump, regardless of it's looks! Additionally, it does you no good if it's stored somewhere in or on the kayak; ya got ta put it on when you "get in" or "get on" the kayak!

2nd, you have got to dress for the water's temperature, not the air temperature. If you dump and don't have the right clothing on you're going to be very cold! Hypothermia is deadly!! Dress in layers and avoid cotton where ever possible. If you're wearing waders & a dry top, please make sure you have a belt on, on the outside of the dry top, to form a seal.

3rd, create a float plan - however sketchy - and give it to your "personal contact". If something goes wrong the authorities have a place to start looking! It may give them enough time to save your life...

Finally, thanks for the kind words, Dave.  I've only been fishing out of a kayak for 7 years and have gleaned most of my knowledge via the school of hard knocks.  I'm just trying my best to help the people who are less experianced and help grow the sport... It is addictive and I am addicted! (Honest - just ask my wife!)  Dave - good luck over the weekend!! Please, keep us posted & do let us know ablout the new lure.

Well I hope you all had a great weekend.....

I was able to get out on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Friday- Was on the water by 11:30 pm and the wind was north west, With a incoming tide...

I had just put the kayak in the water and found fish feeding right away... Started fishing my yellow Mambo Minnow, My very first fish of the night was well over 30"... not bad for the first fish.

I was able to get 7 fish before the current and wind started to slow down, I did have the chance to try out the new color Mambo-Minnow in the Bubblegum Pattern.... IT WORKS... my big fish of the night was 35".

Saturday- Should have stayed home, no wind or tide flow, I fished all the same spots as I did the night before...

The bait was there, But could not see or hear a fish, This has happen to me before and I should have thought about it before going out...

I will always do better in rough water with a good current, those calm nights just don't produce fish back there.

Not much of a report, will have my kayak tip posted on Wednesday, Why You Need An Anchor

Nice report Dave!  Thanks for the info!
Was the bubblegum Mambo the new plug you had alluded to in an earlier post?
